A Night Out For The Oldies (And Not Just Me!)

I was feeling particularly sorry for the ‘Elderly and Infirm’ on Friday, so I decided to take them out for some fish and chips and an evening at the cinema.

The E and I wanted to see ‘The Iron and Lady’ and we couldn’t find it on anywhere in the Brighton and Hove area. I searched on the internet and found that it was on in Lewes (that is a gross untruth; Pam, in the office, checked for me and saved the day). At first I thought it would be a bit of a ball-ache, driving all the way out there, but thankfully I got on and did it.

Lewes Cinema is a small arts centre in a former church. You would have no idea from the outside. When you go in, there’s just a one lady sitting, waiting behind a small table, collecting the money (it was only a fiver to get in!). The whole place really did have a very sweet, warm, community feel to it. I also noticed that they had quite a good crowd out for a film that’s been out for ages, so it’s obviously well supported locally.

Everyone was sat on plastic chairs and the film was beamed onto a projector screen at the front. It was like something out of a post-war film – a ‘very English’ affair – and nowt wrong with that.

Good luck to the Lewes Cinema. I hope they can survive against the awful Odeon (with its disgusting toilets). I shall certainly be going back.
