Who ate all the pies? Me!

The Windmill Pub, 6-8 Mill Street, Mayfair, London, W1S 2AZ. (Near Old Bond Street).

My primarily food and, secondly, legal adviser, Mr Andrew Needleman, is a self-proclaimed buff of the taste and knowledge of both codes. He, today, put up The Windmill Pub as serving the best pies in London town. I was then informed by him that he has read the claim in the columns of two separate newspapers, and that we should investigate the matter, post haste. I treated the situation as a red emergency and reacted immediately to his call to action.

My initial thoughts though were: ‘Pies?! Blah, blah, blah. Are you joking? It all sounds a bit Wetherspoons to me’. BUT, I was wrong. Badly wrong. This place is excellent. A proper old-fashioned boozer (yes, there is still one left out there). Very comfortable, and with a full selection of bitters and real ales for you to sup on over your lunch, this is definitely the place to come on a cold winter day.

There was an extensive choice of the speciality of the house, and when our chosen pies arrived they were in a thick and tasty pastry, mine well-filled with chicken, ham, mushroom and a thick white sauce. Superb, well done chips (a necessity), and a delicious portion of vegetables mixed with bacon were the side accompaniments.

I can imagine that when Dick Whittington arrived in London, after his long and tiring journey, this may have been his first port of call. A good fill for him before going off to make his fortune or, more likely, do his bollocks in the local boutiques and hugely over-priced shops.

Yes. The best pies in town. I shall certainly be returning to eat them all over the coming months.
