ANTEPOST: 1000 and 2000 Guineas

Published On April 12, 2017 | ANTEPOST

2000 Guineas

The first Classic of the season, and a race Aidan O’Brien will be attempting to win for an eighth time with warm favourite Churchill. High class stablemate Caravaggio may be a more likely type for sprint races at 3, and the strongest opposition to the Ballydoyle hot pot will most likely come from the three trial winners, namely Al Wukair, Barney Roy and Eminent. Al Wukair, trained by the French master Andre Fabre, showed a fine turn of foot to beat a Group 1 winner, while Barney Roy & Eminent were strong at the finish of the Greenham & Craven respectively. Greenham second Dream Castle remains a horse of huge promise.

1000 Guineas

This fillies’ Classic has gone to Ireland four times and over to France another three in the last decade, and Aidan O’Brien has his usual strong hand to play. Rhododendron heads the market & has done since her clear cut success in the Fillies’ Mile over course and distance – her dam is the triple Group 1 winner Halfway To Heaven so she’s definitely bred for the job! Godolphin filly Wuheida won her Group 1 at Chantilly on Arc weekend and she heads the list of challengers, closely followed by the ex-John Oxx Sea Of Grace & Frankel filly Fair Eva. Rain Goddess & Talaayeb are once-raced maiden winners with loads of potential.
