Royal Ascot Friday: Simon Nott’s Tales from The Ring

ROYAL ASCOT DAY FOUR: Simon Nott is back on course for day four. It’s now 2-1 to the layers with still plenty to play for over the remaining two days.

We generally price up a daily special, today’s was Just Wonderful and Delano Roosevelt both to win at 12/1. We were expecting some interest in it but not the grand a punter walked up with.

2:30 Albany Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3)

The first race itself kicked off in unbelievable style – they came in big £300,000 – £150,000 Just Wonderful followed by a £100,000 – £30,000 Fairyland followed by £50,000 – £25,000 Just Wonderful. We were up the front two in some style. The roar went up on the joint when it was obvious both were beaten, Main Edition winning at 7/1 was a monumental result.

3:05 King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2)

Once the dust had settled it was a waiting game to see if the big punters would be back in. The stickers-on were lurking but there was nothing done as they went down to post. The office called with a bet of £120,000 – £20,000 Old Persian, that looked value as they started going behind, by that time a 9/2 shot. Nothing lumpy done on course though. At the off that was the only loser in the on-course book too, just weight of public money, no lumps. Old Persian won, a bump back down to Earth in the office but no real damage done on course.

3:40 Commonwealth Cup (Group 1)

The punters formed an orderly queue to be paid out and get on. In the next, business was very steady if not in lumps. Big punters were spotted but held back on course though the office laid £110,000 – £40,000 Sioux Nation. Though business was small it was very brisk with a lot of horses backed. One of the biggest bets on course with us was £2,800 – £200 each way the winner Eqtidaar which made it the worst in the on-course book and a four-figure loser in a race which normally would have been a good winning one. It returned 12/1 so had been nibbled. The office copped their big bet though so no absolute disaster.

4:20 Coronation Stakes (Fillies’ Group 1)

Business was steady again, the punter that backed the winner re-invested a monkey each-way on Coeur De Beaute at 12/1 early in the betting. The mission then was to try and bet up to it, it didn’t look like the big punters would be playing.

The office laid £110,000 – £40,000 Alpha Centauri and we laid £2,700 – £600 late Clemmi.

Alpha Centauri won in a track record time and cost the office dearly but was only a small loser in the on-course book.

With two big handicaps to go it ought to be safe to put the metaphorical elastic bands around the lumps won in the first – assuming we wouldn’t get tucked up for untold bundles in the two concluding handicaps.

5:00 Sandringham Stakes (Fillies’ Handicap)

The penultimate was steady as expected no big bets of note but a reasonable book with three four-figure losers. And one with five, the winner Agrotera, a nasty reversal but it was the one they all wanted to be on and the 11/2 favourite.

5:35 Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap)

Betting was bustling up in the last two seperate cash punters came in for a monkey a piece on Count Calabash at 8/1. That was still the worst in the book as they set off.

Dash of Spice the 7/2 jolly won but it amazingly won the price of a team curry in the book. So that’s where we’re off once we’ve paid out. Back tomorrow for the grand finale and after Ben’s mettle was tested in the first copping plenty well in front on the week going into the last day. As we know it can turn in one race so no premature Aye Ayes just yet.
