£20.24 New Year Charity Bets Challenge

Our tipping panel have burnt the festive midnight oil, dusted down their crystal baubles and put together their idea of the best starsports.bet ante-post selections for 2024…

We’re hoping the class of 2024 does a little better than last year’s panel. The star tipster from 2023 was Steve Mullington who netted £97.06 thanks to him putting up National winner Corach Rambler at 20/1 whilst our regular NFL pundit Andy Richmond struck with his 7/2 pick Kansas City Chiefs who won the Super Bowl.

As for the rest, let’s just say even radar had trouble spotting their picks…

Our tipsters were raising money for the Trussell Trust and Star Sports have generously boosted the donation to them from £121.83 to £250.00.

Our chosen charity in 2024 is the Injured Jockeys Fund and our pundits have £20.24 to stake at current starsports.bet prices and show their reasoning…

It’s one of the craziest and most unpredictable football tournaments on the planet, but the 2024 version of the African Nations Cup can go to the hosts Ivory Coast (7/1).

Les Éléphants (The Elephants) have a strong team with many talented and experienced players, and performing in front of a jingoistic home crowd is sure to lift their spirits even higher and will encourage them to go all the way.

▪️ With wins at the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship in 2023, Viktor Hovland has proven he can deliver on the big days.

It’s only a matter of time before this cool headed Norwegian wins his first major and I believe he can deliver at Royal Troon.

⭐ Selections and Stakes:
➡️ £5.06 each/way on Ivory Coast to win AFCON at 7/1 with starsports.bet – live price: ?
➡️ £5.06 each/way on Viktor Hovland at 14/1 to win the 152nd Open Championship at 14/1 with starsports.bet – live price: ?

The ante-post Cheltenham Festival got a bigger shake-up than the Christmas tub of chocolates when you’re nan is hunting for her favourite orange creams over the festive period.

One of the most impressive winners was Irish Point at Leopardstown when stepping up to 3m for the first time. After running away with the Jack de Bromhead Christmas Hurdle, Gordon Elliott suggested he might swerve Cheltenham and head to Aintree as he has Teahupoo at the top of the Stayers’ Hurdle betting.

I’d be amazed if he stuck by that with Teahupoo so reliant on deep ground and Irish Point looking top notch. Irish Point’s form from last season also got a right boost when Crambo – beaten more than 17 lengths in the Grade 1 Mersey Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree last season – landed the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot just before Christmas.

⭐ Selections and Stakes:
➡️ £20.24 on Irish Point to win the Stayers’ Hurdle at 5/1 with starsports.bet – live price: ?

Aston Villa have had a terrific 2023 and, while I think they’ll miss out on a place in the Premier League’s top four, they look a great bet to win the Europa Conference League. Unai Emery has a phenomenal European track record and I would be genuinely shocked if he didn’t add to it this season.

▪️ Manchester City are the favourites to lift a second successive European Cup but history tells us it is a tall order to retain the trophy. Real Madrid are the most successful club in the history of the competition and have a potential Ballon D’Or winner in Jude Bellingham in their ranks. Carlos Ancelotti has decided to snub the advances of Brazil to sign a new contact as manager, a clear sign he knows the phenomenal talent he has as his disposal.

⭐ Selections and Stakes:
➡️ £10.24 on Aston Villa to win the Europa Conference League at 11/4

➡️ £10 on Real Madrid to win the Champions League at 11/2 with starsports.bet – live price: ?

I’m banking on a French invasion in the Stayers Hurdle with the new kid on the block Theleme at 4/1 for Arnaud Chaille-Chaille. Theleme needs little introduction, a five time G1 winning six-year-old with the world at his feet.

Destroyed Hewick, Klassical and Flooring Porter  in the G1 Grande Course de Haies at Auteuil. The only thing that beats this horse in the Stayers Hurdle is the jockeys’ lack of experience in British races and understanding of Cheltenham.

I think Banbridge offers a bit of value at 20/1 for the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham for Joseph O’Brien. An improving 7yr-old with a grade 1 victory under his belt over the trip. A lot of the horses entered in this race are getting on in years or set to run in different races.

I think Joseph will keep this horse fresh and pray he gets a decent surface come race day, a former winner at the festival in the Martin Pipe Hurdle, and an impressive winner of a Grade 2 Chase smashing Tommy’s Oscar with ease by 6L.

Banbridge is overpriced and worth backing now.

⭐ Selections and Stakes:
➡️ £10.12 on Theleme to win Stayers Hurdle at 4/1 with starsports.bet – live price: ?
➡️ £10.12 on Banbridge to win Ryanair Chase at 20/1 with starsports.bet – live price: ?

The Christmas action resulted in plenty of ante-post movement in the Cheltenham Festival novice chases, but not so much in the novice hurdle division. Ballyburn did lay down a marker for the Ballymore, but that race still has a relatively open feel to it.

The novice hurdler who I’ve been most taken with – this side of the Irish Sea – is Harry Fry’s GIDLEIGH PARK, who is currently available at 16/1 after wins at Exeter and Newbury. Despite still looking quite green, he powered clear when stepped up in trip last time and he threatens to improve in a more truly-run race and as he gains further experience.

He is due to contest the Classic Novices’ Hurdle on trials day (I did request a price for this race for my ‘charity bet’, but it fell on deaf ears with the Star Sports social media team) and if successful there, he could easily half in price. It is worth remembering that he beat The Jukebox Man in a bumper at Chepstow last spring and he was less than 2 lengths off Captain Teague in Saturday’s Challow Hurdle.

⭐ Selections and Stakes:
➡️ £20.24 on Gidleigh Park to win Ballymore Novices Hurdle at 16/1 with starsports.bet – live price: ?

The English Greyhound Derby has been run five times at Towcester (2017-2018 and 2021-2023) and although no dog has gone unbeaten in those events a few have gone very close.

My wholly unscientific opinion is Towcester is quite a specialists track and the configuration makes hard-luck stories less likely than at, say, a Wimbledon.

The one week break between all rounds make this special copping a lot more likely than would previously have been the case. I also think finding enough dogs to fill the event will be more of a challenge in future years.

⭐ Selections and Stakes:
➡️ £20.24 on Any Dog to go Unbeaten in the English Derby at 8/1 with starsports.bet – live price: ?

I have been following It’s For Me since he went past the field like they were tied to the fence in an Irish point-to-point a couple of years ago. He went to Willie Mullins and won as he liked in a bumper at Navan. He competed in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham last year and finished a highly creditable fifth, no more than two and a half lengths from the winner.

If he starts in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, I think it offers great value at his current price of 12/1 and I’m only too happy to invest my 20.24 on the nose.

Having had success with a split stakes approach last year in the race to win the Super Bowl I’m going to employ the same tactics this time around and pick two sides one from conference in the hope that one will have a chance of landing the Vince Lombardi Trophy on Sunday February 11th, 2024.

First up I’m going straight back to one of the sides that I selected last year in this section and put the larger stake of £15.24 on the San Francsico 49ers who to my mind are the most complete team in the NFL. Offensively sound it was probably only an injury last season to QB Brock Purdy that cost them a shot at getting to the Super Bowl. This time around they have a real shot at landing the #1 seeding in the NFC. With Purdy at the helm of an offence that consists of plenty of dangerous skill players like RB Christian McCaffrey, WRs, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk and TE George Kittle they really should not have any trouble scoring having racked up 444 points so far this season. Sound defensively they are the most complete NFL team and if they can secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs will be very hard to beat.

My second pick is going to be rather more speculative and I’m going to ride with a team that many had written off this year in the Buffalo Bills. To quote a cliché if they make the playoffs (they still have a shot at winning the division if events fall their way) they will be a team that nobody really wants to play. After coming up short in recent seasons in the playoffs, often by the barest of margins it looked as though the Buffalo Super Bowl window was closing especially when they lost to the Eagles earlier in the season to stand at that point at 6-6.

At that point, they were in playoff mode to get their season back on track and they have done just that winning the next three to relight their playoff and Super Bowl hopes. The change of offensive coordinator looks to have given the offence a new lease of life and with Josh Allen at QB anything is possible. I just have a feeling that the Bills may have been written off a little too soon in their Super Bowl quest so the remaining £5 goes on Buffalo to finally win a Super Bowl and end the record of being the side (along with the Vikings) to have made the most Super Bowl appearances (four) without winning the trophy.

⭐ Selections and Stakes:
➡️ £15.24 on San Francisco 49ers to win the Super Bowl at 5/2 with starsports.bet – live price: ?
➡️ £5 on Buffalo Bills to win the Super Bowl at 10/1 with starsports.bet – live price: ?

A Ukrainian boxer so good they named him twice – Oleksandr Oleksandrovych Usyk – is a knockout choice to carry my hopes of finally administering defeat to the increasingly eccentric Tyson Fury.

The fight was delayed until February, following Fury’s bizarre decision to take on 37 year old fighter, Francis Ngannou – with one previous bout under ring rules to his credit – who embarrassingly proceeded to deck the champion.

Fury narrowly avoided defeat in a split decision, and the shock may make his probable tactics against the man who twice saw off Joshua err on the cautious side. Unless he tells himself he needs to go out and blast his way to a spectacular ko.

Whichever, I think his opponent is capable of frustrating and outboxing the giant Fury at 6/5 and he’ll be carrying my £20.24 stake money….

➡️ £20.24 on Oleksandr Usyk to beat Tyson Fury at 6/5 with starsports.bet – live price: ?

The Christmas period is usually useful for scouting out potential Cheltenham-bound novice hurdlers. This year, that is not the case.

In the Supreme, A Dream To Share is yet to jump an obstacle and Jeriko Du Reponet’s price is extremely prohibitive after his facile win at Newbury. On that basis, IT’S FOR ME is the selection at 11/1. After taking a fierce hold on his hurdling debut, the five-year-old brushed aside subsequent dual Group One winner Caldwell Potter and 133-rated Ascending.

In the Ballymore, there are plenty of exciting prospects but I’d argue ILE ATLANTIQUE could be the best of the bunch. On his scintillating hurdling bow, he showed all of the qualities of a potential Festival winner. What’s more, he even impressed on the clock…

⭐ Selections and Stakes:

Milano-San Remo is the first monument of the season, the first chance for the big guys to go toe-to-toe. It’s been a few years since the race ended in a sprint, it’s about time it happened again.

As the sprinters continue to improve their climbing, I’m looking at a reduced sprint to decide who takes home the title.

With van der Poel by his side, I’ll take a win for Jasper Philipsen. If 2023 showed us anything, it’s that Philipsen is ready to win his first monument, and it won’t be his last.

Graham Holland has enjoyed another year to remember in the world of greyhound racing and he will be chasing a hat trick of straight successes in the 2024 English Greyhound Derby.

He will no doubt hold a very strong hand, with Ballinakill Alf top of the pile for me.

Star Sports go 25/1 and that looks very attractive.

All about early speed, he’s a 28.10 winner around Shelbourne Park and in recent months, Holland has kept him busy over sprinting trips. I’d be fairly confident he can go a long way and he’s worthy of market support at fancy odds.

Late in 2023, we saw how Ronnie O’Sullivan remains peerless, so long as he is motivated. He didn’t even need to be at his best to win snooker’s first major of the season.

Looking back through his titles won since the start of 2018, almost all have come in either majors, smaller field invitationals or restricted to higher ranked players. The grind of seven rounds in a standard ranking event just doesn’t get his juices flowing anymore.

The Masters has always been his perfect event – the top-16, in London – and he has extra incentive this year. The only big achievement Ronnie hasn’t managed yet is to win the triple crown – UK Championship, Masters and World Championship in the same season. Nobody has done it since Mark Williams 21 years ago. With the UK already in the bag, it is perfectly realistic.

Furthermore, the Masters draw has been very kind, pitching the Rocket in the other half of the draw to those likeliest to give him a tough game. Judd Trump, Mark Selby and Mark Allen can carve each other up before he need worry about facing any of them in the final.

Whereas in his path are players he’s generally dominated over the years – Barry Hawkins, Shaun Murphy, Jack Lisowski. Take 4/1 for this title and Starsports’ offer of 25-1 for the triple crown.

⭐ Selections and Stakes:
➡️ £10.12 on Ronnie O’Sullivan to win the Masters at 4/1 with starsports.bet – live price: ?

Just as with last year, I’m going to attempt to find the winner of my favourite punting puzzle – the Grand National – and going into the new year, Mahler Mission sits atop my shortlist for the Aintree showpiece. John McConnell’s soon-to-be eight-year-old looks to possess all the attributes needed to make his mark felt in this year’s new-look race; a sweet-mover on the bridle and one who is equally generous off the bit, I’m confident he’ll have no issue with the marathon trip given his showing at Cheltenham last year.

For my money, he had the measure of Gaillard du Mesnil when taking a late fall in the National Hunt Chase and appears to have to continued his progress into this season, setting a fine stall with a view to Aintree when a clear second to Datsalrightgino in a strong-looking renewal of the Coral Gold Cup.

So progressive is Mahler Mission that I think also he rates a fine each-way bet in the Gold Cup, but the Grand National rates as a more attainable target, I’m happy to go all in at 20s in the biggest betting race of the year.

A race being billed as a straight match between El Fabiolo and Jonbon may not be the two-horse race many are predicting. Last year’s runner-up Captain Guinness looked brilliant on his reappearance at Navan last month and may be underestimated at 16/1.

There was something about the way he jumped last time that suggests he may just be reaching his peak and he’s got decent Festival form to boot. Neither of the market leaders really impressed last time and I could easily see an upset here.

After winning the King George, Hewick clearly showed he stays all day. He looks a similar type to Tiger Roll, a small horse with a huge heart. His main target will be the Gold Cup in March, where I can see him running a big race but ultimately may get too far behind to challenge.

The National in April looks a perfect fit and at 25/1 he looks worth chancing for what would be a fairytale story considering the price he was bought for.

My thinking is, the additional time now being added on will result in more goals, and although the EPL is looking competitive at the top, I fear there are some vulnerable teams at the bottom end of the table, I can see Haaland coming back strong and the possibility of Arsenal signing a finisher in January to get on the end of the dozens of chances they create.

Finally, don’t forget the bet runs through to the end of the year so you get any new exciting signings for the first five months of next season too.

They say a week is a long time in politics. On that basis, football must be an eternity. Had strong hopes for quite a while with my two-pronged attack on the National League North in 2023.

However, Darlington and King’s Lynn Town both dropped out of contention sadly and are still dropping this season 🙁 Turn the table upside down and it looks a lot more rosy…

I’ve scoured the directory of ‘Will It Happen?’ in 2024 Star Sports specials and don’t think Eddie Howe is the worst bet at 7/4 to leave the Toon at any point during 2024. The problem that Howe has is the expectation bar is now set so high with the new owners that his previous successes with the club almost get reset and it might now just be an impossible project.

We’ve seen in the last few weeks the wheels starting to come off after an entertaining, but ultimately unsuccessful Champions League foray when they definitely had it in their own hands to reach the knockout phase.

Christmas losses against Forest and Luton highlight their vulnerability and a bit like with Bournemouth, Howe may now have played all his cards.

Consider this enticing New Year Specials offer: Michael van Gerwen, Luke Humphries, or Gerwyn Price winning both the Premier League and World Matchplay at 6/1.

At the time of writing, van Gerwen stands as the 11/8 favourite for the World Championship and has been exemplary in his chase for a fourth title. Having clinched the Premier League six times in the last decade, the format appears tailor-made for him.

Cool Hand Luke has secured three majors this year, demonstrating remarkable consistency in the latter half of 2023. Despite recent lacklustre performances at Ally Pally, attributing one to a broken dart point, Humphries remains a strong contender, with it being long odds-on him winning another major in 2024.

The Iceman Gerwyn Price, despite a disappointing Christmas effort, will surely bounce back to form soon and contend for majors in 2024.

Looking beyond these top three contenders, notably players like Michael Smith and Peter Wright, are currently facing significant slumps in their game and I’m happy to go against their chances for the Premier League and World Matchplay.

With this opinion established, although rolling the singles of both players may pay more than 6s, I can’t see anyone outside of those big 3 winning the Premier League, and that winner will certainly be less than 6s for the Matchplay in July.

⭐ Selections and Stakes:
➡️ £20.24 on Any of Michael van Gerwen, Luke Humphries or Gerwyn Price to Win both the Premier League & World Matchplay at 6/1 with starsports.bet – live price: ?

There are plenty of interesting and intriguing markets from starsports.bet’s list of 2024 New Year specials, but one in particular caught my interest at even money.

Even if England are successful at EURO 2024, it does feel like we are coming towards a natural conclusion to the long reign of Gareth Southgate as Three Lions boss.

A disappointing campaign, which doesn’t look too unlikely considering how shaky England have looked at times over recent months, would only make it more likely.

▪️ Maybe this is slightly reactionary after only watching Derby County whoop the team I support in recent days, but with the form they are currently in (seven wins and one draw in their last eight), coupled with Portsmouth and Bolton Wanderers hitting problems at the top, I like the look of Derby winning the League One title outright at 5/2.
