1. Leeds United

After last season’s near-miss, falling at the final hurdle to Southampton in the play-offs, Leeds United will be looking to bounce back in a big way and secure the Championship title.

Leeds missing out on promotion last term will ultimately be deemed a failure, but Daniel Farke’s side did amass 90 points which would have been more than enough for a top-two finish in almost every Championship campaign.

Although losing key players Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville is a blow, they should still have the quality to be ultra-competitive at the top of the table, especially if they can bring in Norwich City forward Jonathan Rowe as has been rumoured recently.

The addition of Jayden Bogle from Sheffield United and the permanent signing of Joe Rodon, who was so impressive on loan last season, should also give Leeds some balance across the back line.

There will be pressure on Farke heading into this season, you do get the impression it is win or bust for the former Norwich City and Krasnodar boss, but his nous for winning promotion from this level, coupled with Leeds’ star-studded squad, should be enough to see them over the line this time.

Leeds United to win the title – currently at ? with starsports.bet

2. Luton Town

Although Luton Town gave a good account of themselves in the Premier League last season, they couldn’t beat the drop, but I think they have an excellent chance of bouncing straight back up at the first attempt.

Arguably the best business that the Hatters have managed to do this summer is to keep hold of manager Rob Edwards – who was tentatively linked with the Brighton job at one stage – as his influence on this club since his arrival in November 2022 cannot be overstated.

They have also managed to retain – so far – players like Carlton Morris and Tahiti Chong who both made a great impact for Luton in their Premier League campaign and will back themselves to tear the Championship up this season.

On top of that, they have added Ruell Walters and Shandon Baptiste – both on free transfers – in deals that look like great business for the club moving forward.

They could probably do with one or two more signings, but I back Luton as a club to make the right decisions in the final few weeks of this window, and I can see them being right up there in the Championship this season.

Luton to be the top relegated team – currently at ? with starsports.bet

3. Burnley

After they romped home to the Championship title in 2022-23, and under the stewardship of Vincent Kompany, many thought the Clarets might be able to kick on in the Premier League last season.

However, a desperately disappointing season followed, which resulted in immediate relegation back to the Championship, and Burnley now find themselves back at square one; this time under the guidance of former Fulham and Bournemouth boss Scott Parker.

The first job in Parker’s intray is to make sense of Burnley’s incredibly bloated squad, which is currently carrying over 40 players, but the quality is there to make the Clarets a force at the top of the table this season.

I have slight reservations over Parker, but you can’t argue with his record at this level, and I do believe that if he can cut through all the excess in that bloated squad, there’s a lot of excellent Championship quality there that should have a good season.

4. Middlesbrough

Overall, it was a fairly disappointing season for Middlesbrough, although in hindsight maybe should have been expected considering the players they lost last summer.

This season, there will be fewer excuses for Michael Carrick and co. Nothing but a solid promotion push will do for an ambitious side looking to take that next step back into the Premier League.

There haven’t been too many signings come in so far, but all of them look like strong additions to this Boro squad, with Luke Ayling signing permanently from Leeds and Aidan Morris and Delano Burgzorg also arriving at the Riverside Stadium.

It does look like super-talented wideman Micah Hamilton and promising Bristol City striker Tommy Conway could be about to follow them, though, which would have Boro in excellent shape ahead of this new season.

I have a lot of admiration for Carrick – the fact he is currently 33/1 for the England job with starsports.bet tells its own story on how highly-rated the former Manchester United midfielder is – and if all the pieces can fall into place and they can have a strong start to the campaign, Boro should be right up there.

5. Coventry City

The highlight of the 2023-24 campaign for Coventry City was unquestionably their remarkable FA Cup run which saw them come desperately close to seeing off Manchester United in the semi-final at Wembley.

That run probably came at the expense of their league campaign, though, as Mark Robins’ side quickly faded away from the race for a play-off spot after that crushing defeat to United.

This season their full focus will be on the league and going one better than they did in the 2022-23 campaign by, not only qualifying for the play-offs, but this time winning them and returning to the top-flight for the first time in close to 25 years.

Their main strength is undoubtedly their frontline which is now looking pretty scary after they beat Hull City to the signing of Brandon Thomas-Asante to complement Haji Wright, Ephron Mason-Clark and Ellis Simms.

The main focus over the coming weeks for Robins is to try and start strongly and not have to play catch-up again like they have had to in the last two seasons after very slow starts.

If they can sort that out, I see no reason why Coventry won’t be amongst it at the top of the Championship this season.

6. Norwich City

It’s a new era for Norwich City with Johannes Hoff Thorup taking charge of the Canaries after a failed play-off campaign saw David Wagner’s reign come to an end after a year-and-a-half at the helm.

There are quite a few unknown quantities when it comes to Norwich City. They have lost Gabriel Sara, a big blow indeed, to Turkish side Galatasaray but the futures of Jonathan Rowe and Josh Sargent are still up in the air.

If they can retain them, with Abu Kamara also coming into the fold after a very fruitful loan spell with Portsmouth, the Canaries’ frontline should look exciting and dangerous when they face Oxford United on the opening day, but could look threadbare if either or both were to depart.

Even if that does happen though, I do trust sporting director Ben Knapper to make the necessary additions to the squad and I am fully on board with the appointment of Thorup after his success with FC NordsjĂŚlland.

Another play-off campaign on the horizon for the Canaries.

7. Sheffield United

Sheffield United were always going to be up against it in the Premier League, but the campaign which saw them instantly relegated back to the Championship last season was nothing short of shambolic.

Chris Wilder, who of course was the man who fired the Blades into the Premier League in 2018-19, is now back at the helm and tasked with rebuilding a side that went down with a whimper last season and bringing them back into the top-flight with momentum.

They have made a promising start in their squad rebuild as well by adding Sam McCallum, Jamie Shackleton, Harrison Burrows, Callum O’Hare and Kieffer Moore to a core of a squad that already possesses plenty of top-end Championship quality.

The departures of Jayden Bogle and Oli McBurnie will hurt the Blades, and they still have more to do in the transfer market, which is why I have them just outside the play-off places at this moment in time.

I do still expect them to be a dangerous side this season, though, and I think a 7th-place finish is fair for where they are currently at.

8. West Bromwich Albion

In Carlos Corberan, West Bromwich Albion have arguably one of the best managers in the whole of the EFL, but I fear the off-field issues looming over the club could seriously hurt their promotion aspirations this season.

The Baggies were recently placed under an EFL-imposed business plan which will limit their transfer activity in this window with the club in danger of falling foul of the Championship’s financial guidelines.

This will frustrate Corberan as, after missing out on promotion last season, he will have been eager to strengthen his squad and push on to go one better in this upcoming Championship campaign.

I can’t say that I have been particularly bowled over by the business they have done so far with Devante Cole, Ousmane Diakite, Torbjorn Heggem, Joe Wildsmith and Paddy McNair the new faces at the Hawthorns at the time of writing, but I am placing a lot of ability of Corberan to get the absolute maximum out of this squad.

My prediction is that they will miss out on the play-offs, but still manage a respectable 8th-place finish.

9. Bristol City

Liam Manning came in for a fair amount of flak from Bristol City fans last season after he replaced popular boss Nigel Pearson, but with some new additions coming in and a pre-season under his belt, I am expecting progress to be made at Ashton Gate.

Manning is an impressive coach, who before he was head-hunted by Bristol City last season, had Oxford United playing some fabulous football in League One and also did excellent work at MK Dons before that.

Although Robins supporters had some skepticism over his appointment, mainly due to their respect for his predecessor Pearson, with the right backing Manning has what it takes to be a top Championship manager.

And it seems like he has received a good amount of backing this summer with Fally Mayulu, Sinclair Armstrong and Yu Hirakawa coming through the door. Armstrong in particular feels like a striker right up Manning’s street who – if he can become more ruthless in front of goal – should have a positive impact.

I am not sure they are quite equipped for a play-off campaign yet, but all being well, they shouldn’t be too far off.

10. Sunderland

There was so much expectation heading into the 2023-24 campaign, but it turned out to be a shambolic campaign for the Black Cats with the decision to dispense of experienced boss Tony Mowbray backfiring spectacularly.

There is still a lot of potential in this squad though, and with the hierarchy at the club seemingly starting to realise there needs to be a bit more of a balance between youth and experience, Sunderland should be in for a much better campaign this time around.

To complement the crop of exciting young talent at the club, which includes Anthony Patterson, Chris Rigg, Dan Neil and Jobe Bellingham (brother of Jude), the Black Cats have made more smart, experienced additions like Alan Browne from Preston North End which should improve the side’s balance.

New boss Regis Le Bris is an unknown quantity at Championship level, but was known for his expansive style and ability to develop young talent at previous club Lorient, which should suit Sunderland like a dream. Hopefully their long, long, long search for a Michael Beale replacement will pay off there.

I have Sunderland slightly off the pace in the race for a play-off spot in a strong Championship, but I am expecting huge improvements from a 2023-24 campaign which they will be keen to forget as soon as possible.

11. Sheffield Wednesday

Owner Dejphon Chansiri has come in for a fair amount of stick from Wednesday fans during his tenure at the club – most of it completely justified – but credit where it is due, the decision to appoint Danny Rohl as manager last season was an absolute masterstroke.

In the early stages of the season, under the stewardship of former Watford boss Xisco Munoz, Sheffield Wednesday looked dead and buried and almost certain to make an immediate return to League One after promotion via the play-offs the season before.

But the appointment of Rohl, a name that came completely out of nowhere, helped not only salvage their season but also set up an exciting 2024-25 campaign for Wednesday.

They have been incredibly busy on the transfer front, with only Oxford United making more signings in the Championship this summer, and look like a much stronger unit than they did 12 months ago.

Promising goalkeeper James Beadle returning on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, who was so influential in the turnaround under Rohl last season, is probably the outstanding piece of business conducted by Wednesday this summer.

And, after so many rumours suggesting he would be set for a summer departure from the club, the retention of Josh Windass is also a piece of business that the South Yorkshire side will be delighted with.

After spending most of last season in the relegation zone, I am sure Wednesday would be pleased with an 11th-place finish this term.

12. Hull City

Hull City made the bold, brave, and rather controversial decision to sack Liam Rosenior after they narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season.

In his place comes Tim Walter, known for his aggressive, expansive and attacking style of play from his time as Hamburg boss in Germany, in a clear change of direction from the Tigers’ hierarchy.

The summer transfer window has been frustrating for them so far, though, with Jacob Greaves and Jaden Philogene departing the club to Ipswich Town and Aston Villa respectively, and slow progress on adequate replacements at time of writing.

Brandon Thomas-Asante was due to come in and strengthen their strikeforce, but the deal was hijacked by Coventry City at the final hour, which sums up the issues that the Tigers have experienced so far this summer.

I am excited to see what Walter can bring, but it’s clear that reinforcements are needed, and at the moment have Hull off the pace in the race for the play-offs.

13. Swansea City

I did fear last summer that Michael Duff and Swansea City would be an awkward fit, and so it proved to be with the former Cheltenham Town and Barnsley boss sacked by the Swans in December of last year.

Luke Williams came in to replace Duff, leaving his role as Notts County boss where he’d won promotion from the National League the season before, and began to reinstall a style of football that was more conducive to success with the squad that they have.

With a full pre-season under his belt to get his style across, Luke Williams should oversee a season of progress for the Swans which I think will see them well away from any relegation danger which they flirted with at times last term.

I have been impressed with some of their transfer business, particularly the addition of talented striker Zan Vipotnik, who the Swans have managed to pick up on a free transfer from troubled French side Bordeaux.

I fear that Williams’ side might be a little too open defensively for them to challenge much higher than mid-table, but they should be a fun, entertaining watch and involved in a fair few high-scoring fixtures.

14. QPR

Along with Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, Marti Cifuentes was another manager brought in mid-season in the Championship who had a phenomenal impact, and I am expecting that progress to continue into the new season.

The R’s looked broken and destined for the drop under Gareth Ainsworth – who failed to have the desired impact upon his return to Loftus Road – but thankfully managed to get their next appointment spot on with Cifuentes rescuing the club from relegation and getting them playing some lovely football in the process.

This summer, he’s been able to put his stamp on things and brought in fresh faces like Paul Nardi as a replacement for Asmir Begovic, Jonathan Varane (half-brother of Raphael) for Isaac Hayden, and some much-needed firepower in Slovenian striker Zan Celar.

Although they did lose Chris Willock to Cardiff City, the R’s have been able to retain many of their key performers with Steve Cook, Jake Clarke-Salter and Ilias Chair all set for strong seasons under Cifuentes’ leadership.

I can’t see this side – unless Cifuentes gets poached by another club – finishing anywhere near the drop zone and they should be a good, fun side to watch this season.

15. Stoke City

It was a nervy 2023-24 season for Stoke City with the Potters floundering around the relegation places for much of the campaign before finally pulling away in the final few weeks of the campaign, much to the relief of their supporters who will have been fearing the worst.

Under Steven Schumacher, who did a wonderful job with Plymouth Argyle before swapping Devon for Staffordshire, they should be able to kick on and have an improved season but I am not expecting them to set the world alight.

Their additions are smart with goalkeeper Viktor Johanssen – who has certainly been kept busy between the sticks for Rotherham United in recent years – strengthening that department and Sam Gallagher adding some physicality up top.

However, I am not sure anything has come in that will revolutionise their fortunes and star performer Wouter Burger could still leave the club before the end of the window.

16. Cardiff City

It was a promising first season at the helm for Turkish boss Erol Bulut, and most Bluebirds fans were pleased that the club were able to retain his services, but I can see a bit of a decline in their fortunes this season.

Although the results were respectable, the underlying numbers for Cardiff were a bit questionable, and I fear that could catch up with them this season and see results drop off slightly.

The Bluebirds do have quality in their ranks, they will be hoping to get more minutes out of Aaron Ramsey this season and that he will be able to offer real class in that midfield, but it is quite an odd squad in many ways that I am not sure fully fits together.

Alex Robertson is a good signing, mind you, who comes in after a positive loan spell with Portsmouth last season. He will add class, composure and quality to their crop of midfielders.

Bulut should be able to grind out enough results to keep the Welsh side clear of danger, but I am not expecting great things from them next season.

17. Preston North End

Preston seemed to have picked up a decent habit of punching above their weight in recent seasons, finishing in a very respectable 10th-place last term, but I can see a fairly significant drop-off in the offing for Ryan Lowe’s side this time around.

They were propped up for most of the campaign by their impressive, although dare I say fairly lucky, run of six wins at the start of the season. Their form for the rest of the campaign was patchy at best, though, and North End ended it with a run of five successive defeats.

Lowe has never seemed to quite win over a large section of North End supporters, and if this season doesn’t get off to a good start, things could start to turn nasty with Preston fans beginning to really turn on the former Bury boss.

I think they have just enough to keep their heads above water, but this could be an uncomfortable season for North End.

18. Millwall

Returning club legend Neil Harris saved Millwall from the drop last season with an excellent turnaround towards the end of the season after being parachuted in from Cambridge United following the departure of Joe Edwards in February.

After experimenting with a young coach with fresh, expansive ideas, Millwall have now gone back to basics with Harris. I have faith that he’s got the nous and experience to keep them away from danger, but I am certainly not expecting them to set the Championship alight this season.

They have recruited striker Macauley Langstaff, which on paper looks fantastic considering his outrageously good goalscoring record over the last three seasons with Notts County and Gateshead, but I have doubts over how he’ll fit into a direct Harris team when his best work has come in teams who play the ball on the floor.

Goalkeeper Lukas Jensen is a good recruit from Lincoln City, though, as a replacement for Matija Sarkic who tragically lost his life over the summer at the age of just 26.

Like I said, I think Millwall have enough about them to stay out of trouble in the Championship this season, but I think improving on – or even matching – last term’s 13th-place finish will be quite tough.

19. Watford

After winning just four Championship matches in 2024 so far, I am expecting Tom Cleverly’s Watford to be embroiled in a scrap at the bottom-end of the second tier this season.

Although Cleverly managed to stop the rot and put smiles back on faces during his caretaker spell in charge last season following the dismissal of Valerin Ismael, I am left unconvinced by his credentials for what will be a tough season for the Hornets.

The departure of Ismael Kone will hurt them, as will the loss of Yaser Asprilla if he leaves Vicarage Road as is widely expected, and let’s not forget this is a side that struggled as is last season and only stayed up by a mere six points.

As much as it has been billed as a long-term appointment, we all know what Watford are like, and I’d be surprised to see Cleverly last long if things get off to a poor start. And considering they are face Sheffield United, Norwich and Coventry in the first few weeks, that wouldn’t be all that surprising.

19th for Watford.

20. Oxford United

After 25 long years, Oxford United are back in the Championship after a tactical masterclass from local boy Des Buckingham helped see off Bolton Wanderers in the League One play-off final at Wembley in May.

Now the task is simple for Buckingham’s men: now we’ve got here, stay here. But that will be easier said than done for a U’s side that have not played at this level in over two decades.

For full transparency, I am an Oxford United supporter, so I will do my best to be completely unbiased and impartial.

I do genuinely believe though, based on the strong work done by Buckingham and recruitment ace Ed Waldron this summer, that the U’s could have enough to keep their head above water.

The additions of exciting talents like Peter Kioso, Jack Currie, Idris El Mizouni, and Louie Sibley as well as more experienced signings like Will Vaulks and Matt Phillips have Oxford in good shape, and I do not doubt that existing players like Elliott Moore, Cameron Brannagan and Mark Harris will manage the step up.

This is a huge challenge for United, and there will be times of struggle this season, but I am sure everyone at the club would snap your arm off for a finish outside of the bottom three.

21. Derby County

It wasn’t a smooth ride to promotion from League One with manager Paul Warne taking his fair share of criticism over the course last season, but they got the job done in the end, returning to the Championship at the second time of asking.

Now, along with the two other promoted clubs, the first aim will to try and keep their place in the Championship now they have earned it back and make sure they can consolidate their spot back in the second tier of English football.

They still have plenty of work in the window though, and as it stands, look to be heading into the season without their first-choice goalkeeper or centre-forward in place.

That’s not to say that I haven’t been impressed with some of their business – I am excited to see what Crystal Palace loanee David Ozoh can bring to that midfield – but I am not sure they have been able to elevate their squad as much as they would have liked at this stage.

I have Derby staying up…but only just. And it wouldn’t shock me at all to see Warne leave the club if they suffer a poor start to the season.

22. Portsmouth

It was a terrific 2023-24 season for Portsmouth which saw them win the League One title and finally end their absence from the Championship, but I can see them being brought back to Earth with a bump this term.

As much as I admire the duo of John Mousinho and Rich Hughes, at the time of writing, they have not done anywhere near enough to business to elevate their squad to Championship level.

Add into that last season’s top scorer Colby Bishop needing heart surgery and star summer signing Josh Murphy picking up an injury in their final pre-season match, Pompey are not heading into this season in a great place in my view.

Unless they can pull a few rabbits out of the hat in the last few weeks of this summer transfer window, this could be a season of struggle for Portsmouth.

I wouldn’t have expected this at the start of the summer, but I have got Pompey going straight back down.

23. Blackburn Rovers

It was a tough campaign last time out for Blackburn Rovers, and unfortunately for John Eustace’s side, I can only see it getting tougher this season.

Off-field issues are threatening to wreck any chance Blackburn of making progress under a bright, young, up-and-coming coach in Eustace with the Venkys soon facing a court case over the club’s funding which could have huge implications on their immediate and long-term future.

If that court case was to be lost, it could plunge the club into financial difficultly with the budget needing to be slashed and key players, which will likely include last season’s top scorer Sammie Szmodics, shown the door.

Eustace is perhaps the one positive that Rovers will be holding onto, but he’s no miracle worker, and could even walk away if promises are not kept.

Of the signings made, although Makhtar Gueye and Yuki Ohashi come in with decent pedigree from Belgium and Japan respectively, neither have played in England before and it’s hard to know how either will adapt.

This could be a very tough campaign for Blackburn.

24. Plymouth Argyle

It was a bit of a rollercoaster first season back in the Championship for Plymouth Argyle but, ultimately, by the skin of their teeth, managed to survive for another season and have tasked a big name with repeating the trick.

Wayne Rooney is the new man in the dugout in Home Park, which has been met with widespread confusion and mockery after his disastrous spell in charge of Birmingham City last season, and although I think it’s maybe overstated just how bad he is as a manager and there were mitigating factors behind his West Midlands nightmare, I think he could in for another tough ride.

A lot depends on the future of Morgan Whittaker and Michael Cooper – who have been Plymouth’s star players for the last couple of seasons. If they stay, I would be prepared to put Argyle a bit higher but, if as is widely expected, they both depart this could be a long, old season for the Devon-based side.

Regardless of their futures though, I don’t think Argyle have been able to strengthen in the way they would have wanted to so far this window, and I don’t see how a weaker side than the one that only just stayed up last season can survive this time.
