POV: The UK Eurovision Entry Is…Good?! (David Stewart)

In our new DAILY column POV, DAVID STEWART shares his Eurovision hot take ahead of the grand final in Switzerland on Saturday night – can the UK FINALLY win it?!

I shall say this very quietly and possibly delete this POV at around 11pm on Saturday night but here goes…

I actually think the UK Eurovision entry is pretty good this year !!!!

What the Hell Just Happened?

No that’s not me making such an outrageous proclamation but the name of the song from all-girl group Remember Monday.

Musically, the song is structured better than our recent efforts (possibly a few too many tempo changes) and the girls have entered into the spirit of the event even recording social snippets responding to their trolls. The song is also incredibly catchy in my POV.

Tipping at 125/1 you can afford to be wrong a few times but I’m going to try a bet of optimism on a top 5 finish (22/1), 6th-10th (14/1) and 11th-15th 5/1 on the UK finishing position – one of a myriad of specials markets on the annual extravaganza coming from Basel this year. That averages down to around a 13/5 chance for a top 15 placing.

I asked the in-house Eurovision expert JB for his view on my thinking – no holes barred.

John Brackenridge said: “I do admire David’s enthusiasm in getting behind the girls this year, he is right the song is quite a catchy pop number but that’s really all it is, serviceable for chart/radio but not really for a song contest in my opinion.

“The UK/BBC have once again fallen into the trap of sending something that has no ‘Call to Action’ to give viewers a reason to pick up the phone and vote for it and I’d be amazed if they drum up more than 10 points on the Tele vote.

“Juries may show some support but having installed 21st – 25th as 7/4 favourite when pricing up the market that’s unfortunately where I am with the UK this year.”
