STAR RACING PREVIEW Fri: Glorious Goodwood Day 4

Yesterday was a tale of two halves for us at Goodwood, with Coppull landing nice odds in the Richmond Stakes before Rahhiebb disappointed and then See The Fire was a letdown in the Nassau Stakes, with Winter too good in front, but Cerene also beating her in the without betting, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.

We go onto Day 4 with a rapidly changed set of circumstances, as the deluge that hit the track during racing turned ground that had been good at the start of racing (when times under standard for the first two contests) to an offical description of heavy.

However, there was no rain overnight, and the ground currently is soft, good to soft in places with a temperature of 20 degrees, sunshine and breeze. Interesting connections of Australian sprinter Asfoora have kept her in the King George Stakes at 3.05 so far.

The only good to soft areas are on the bends (lower bend, far bend and top bend), so the assumption here is that the ground will ride with cut and that soft ground performers will be advantaged at the very least.

There was plenty of action in the ring yesterday, although there was even more rain – see how our on-course teams fared with Simon Nott’s report:

Aggagio makes the most appeal on paper, but he didn’t get home when sixth in the 2023 renewal of this and that’s the big concern for him, although he looks sure to go well. Sheradann (third) and Zinc White (fifth) showed promise behind Agaggio last time out here and Zinc White, who is a soft ground specialist, could be primed to peak here. He won the 2023 Chester Plate when beating the now 98 rated Novel Legend in clear cut style and his run at Beverley since then can be forgiven, being his second effort after a two year absence on ground faster than he wants. With the cut that he needs today down to a mark of 83, the stars might just align for him, with Kyle of Lochlash the second choice in an open race.

👒 2:30 – Coral Golden Mile (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (3yo+) 1m

Tribal Chief’s last two runs (didn’t stay 10 furlongs at Longchamp and suffered interference at Newcastle when last seen) can be easily forgiven and David Menuisier’s charge is very well handicapped on the evidence of two runner up efforts to the rapidly progressive Bullet Point, who is now rated 100 after finishing runner up in two valuable straight mile handicaps at Ascot including the Royal Hunt Cup. Tribal Chief did well to finish as close as he did when Bullet Point was when rated 86 and 89, is a winner on heavy ground and is the chosen horse for last year’s winning yard with Cristophe Soumillion on board to boot, so has to be onside here.

Dutch Decoy was second in this last year before losing his way but he’s refound his form in the last month with a pair of wins at Newmarket, the last of them an impressive three length success a fortnight ago. Third in the 2023 renewal on soft ground, he was second last year when – like many are in this race – he was unlucky that the door closed on him as the winner was flying clear. He’s 8lbs lower now, arrives bang in form, and the Johnston’s have booked Hollie Doyle for this task.

👒 3:45 – Regent Seven Seas Cruises Bentinck Conditions Stakes (Class 2) (4yo+) 1m

Liberty Lane didn’t raise a leg at Royal Ascot last time out but he’d previously won a C&D listed contest and before plying his trade in group company, he was an an excellent winner of the Cambridgeshire. He has to give weight all round but looks capable on his best form especially if some don’t handle the ground here and he should be hard to beat in what looks a trappy contest. Last season’s Balmoral winner Carrytheone is the main threat, with major improvement expected from his return at Chester, whilst Godwinson isn’t far off this level although he’ll want the ground to dry out based on two disappointments on soft ground at the backend of last year. John Smith’s Cup winner Fox Legacy would be interesting if conditions really dried out but he’s unproven on ground much softer than good.
