STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Fri: Liverpool v Bournemouth

The new Premier League season gets underway on Friday night as champions Liverpool begin the defence of their crown with a clash against Bournemouth at Anfield, writes JOE CITRONE.

It has been a busy summer for Liverpool, with Arne Slot’s side splashing the cash on a host of new signings, which clearly displays just how much they want to retain their Premier League title this season.

As maybe you’d expect, there were one or two teething issues in their Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace, but there should still be excitement about what is to come from the likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike, who both got on the scoresheet at Wembley.

Bournemouth have also been busy this summer, but have been rather forced into that but a number of key departures this transfer window.

Three members of Bournemouth’s defence, Ilya Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez, who have, of course has gone to Liverpool, have left the club this summer with Cherries boss Andoni Iraola forced to rethink his plans for the defence.

This being such a critical part of the team, there have been concerns raised about Bournemouth coming into this new season, and I share some of those concerns, although I still back the talented Iraola to keep the Cherries well clear of any danger at the wrong end of the table.

However, this is a very tough opening assignment for them, and I fear it could be a long evening at Anfield for the South Coast outfit. At 9/5 with starsports.bet, I am backing Liverpool to win both halves here.
