STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sat: Wolves v Manchester City

Last season, Manchester City had a rare campaign to forget but there are plenty of reasons for optimism at the Etihad ahead of their trip to Wolves, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.

A horrendous autumn run of six defeats in eight league games – including a near exit from the Champions League and elimination from the League Cup – threatened even Pep Guardiola’s time at the helm there but they responded well after a busy January, taking 23 points from the last 27 available to finish third.
New January additions Omar Marmoush and Nico Gonzales bedded in well and City have continued with their rebuild, adding exciting attacker Rayan Cherki, defender Rayan Ait-Nouri – who will face his former club this evening – and the highly regarded midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, already making a big impression according to reports.

That all three of them played at the Club World Cup should help their integration, albeit with a shortened pre-season, and whilst a lot of experience has departed with club legends Kevin de Bruyne and Kyle Walker, both were past their exceptional bests.

⭐️ STARSPORTS.BET MATCH MARKETS ⭐️

With the Portugese at the helm Wolves have a real asset, although it’s been a difficult summer in the transfer market with the departure of 15-goal striker Matheus Cunha to Manchester United, – experienced defender Nelson Semedo, and their energetic wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri to City alongside Goncalo Guides (29 appearances), Tommy Doyle (24) and Pablo Sarabia (23).

In Norwegian striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, who scored seven goals in his last nine appearances of the campaign, Wolves have a Chuna replacement and hopes will be high for new arrivals Jhon Arias and Fer Lopez in attack, although they have lost experience from around the park and need to tighten up a defence that let in 69 goals last season, albeit most of them before Pereira arrived. With only David Moller Wolfe having arrived in defence, that could be a hard task unless more players can be found.

It remains to be seen how Wolves fare this season – in Periera they have a fine asset and other teams expected to be around them appear to have just as many if not more concerns – but City, who should be seriously involved in what could be an open title race, could be too good for them.
