WORLD CUP QUALIFYING

STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Fri: Denmark v Scotland

The road to America begins for many European teams as more World Cup qualifying groups get underway, and both Danish and Scottish fans will have realistic dreams of making next year’s expanded tournament, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.

Danish fans have done plenty of travelling in recent times – The Red and Whites have successfully qualified for five of the last seven World Cups including the last two, and nine of the previous 11 European Championships – and they’ll be hopeful of reaching the USA too.

Scotland have improved under Steve Clarke’s guidance with appearances at the Euros in 2020 and 2024, although a group stage exit at Euro 2024 was a disappointment considering the form they carried during qualifying, including a 2-0 defeat of Spain. Relegation to League B of the Nations League after a 3-1aggregate loss to Greece in the playoffs has put pressure on Steve Clarke, who might find the heat increasing after tonight.

Denmark finished four points ahead of Scotland in the last World Cup qualifying group and impressed in the last Nations League, finishing second in the group behind European champions Spain and then beating eventual Nations League winners Portugal in the first leg of their semi-final at home, only to collapse in Lisbon in extra time.

Home comforts are also crucial for the Danes – they have five wins in their last six at the Parken in Copenhagen, with only Spain getting a result in that run. Head coach Brian Riemer will be hoping that Rasmus Hojlund – a 5/4 shot to score anytime with starsports.bet tonight – is ready to hit the ground running after missing gametime so far this season.

Scotland do have quality they can go to war with – Scott McTominay has transformed himself since moving to Napoli and is having a great time in national colours also, with 11 of his 12 international goals coming in the last 24 caps, including the winner at Greece in March.

He’s 5/1 for a goal and 9/1 for an assist with starsports.bet whilst Andy Robertson, Angus Gunn and Ben Doak all play at a high level, for all that they’ve been slightly short of gametime recently. Aaron Hickey being fit enough to start at right-back would be a real boost to visiting prospects.

The Scots’ away from is strong in recent times with successes on the road in Poland and Greece to their name but Denmark offer a step up in quality and they could be too good for the Scots. Only 50% of Denmark’s last ten games have seen over 2.5 goals, so a home win and under 3.5 could be the way to play things tonight.
