PRESS RELEASE: Bridget Phillipson heavy favourite for Labour Deputy Leader role
Phillipson 8/15 from 5/4; Lucy Powell 9/4, Emily Thornberry 10/1
Bridget Phillipson is the heavy odds-on favourite with Star Sports to replace Angela Rayner as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, having announced her intention to enter the contest.
The Education Secretary is 8/15 to win the Deputy Leadership contest, having opened at 5/4 on Tuesday. Phillipson is ahead of MP for Manchester Central Lucy Powell (9/4) and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee Emily Thornberry (10/1).
William Kedjanyi, Political Betting Analyst at Star Sports, said: “With the race for Labour Party Deputy Leader well and truly underway, Bridget Phillipson is our current market leader at 8/15.
“Phillipson is the most senior figure to announce their intention to run so far and has been the best backed by a distance, and she leads Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell (9/4) and Emily Thornberry (10/1), both of whom have confirmed they’re standing.
“Candidates have until Thursday to gain nominations from at least 80 Labour MPs in order to run, meaning that we are set for small final field. Thornberry and Bell Ribeiro-Addy (28/1) face a fight for nominations from left-leaning MP’s, whilst Alison McGovern (16/1) has thrown her hat into the ring, making the fight for MP’s support even more fiercely contested.”
