POV: Hero to Zero? (Alex Crook)
Star Sports ambassador ALEX CROOK reacts to Mohamed Salah’s bombshell interview, where he revealed he wants to leave Liverpool and feels that he has been ‘thrown under the bus’ by the club…
Mo Salah is undoubtedly one of Liverpool’s greatest players and, alongside Steven Gerrard, their best of the Premier League era.
But the man fans call their ‘Egyptian King’ is in danger of destroying his legacy with his explosive comments in the wake of Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Leeds.
Salah claims he has been ‘thrown under the bus’ by the champions and made a scapegoat for their feeble title defence.
By voicing his unhappiness so publicly and taking the pin out of the grenade, Salah has in fact made himself the villain.
He has managed to undermine an already under-pressure Arne Slot, disrespected his teammates, paymasters and fans who adore him all in one foul swoop.
If Salah believes his form since signing a huge new contract at the back end of last season warrants a guaranteed starting spot he is as deluded as he is ill-advised.
In the short-term at least it is hard to see Salah having a future at Liverpool and I would be surprised if he even travelled to Italy for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan.
There is also a cynical part of me that thinks Salah knows exactly what is doing and is simply trying to force through the mega-move to Saudi Arabia that has remained on the table since he pledged his future to Liverpool.
If Salah does not pull on the famous Red jersey again, this will be a very sad way to bow out after a stellar career on Merseyside.
