PRESS RELEASE: Starmer 1/4 to resign this year
Starmer 1/4 to resign this year as Rayner heads Labour leadership
Keir Starmer is now just 1/4 to step down as Labour leader this year, according to the latest betting from Star Sports, following the departure of his Chief of Staff, Morgan McSweeney.
The Labour leader is also 1/6 not to be Prime Minister at the next General Election, underlining growing pressure on Starmer’s leadership amid mounting internal instability.
Angela Rayner has emerged as the clear favourite to succeed Starmer, shortening to 9/4 to become the next permanent Labour leader (from 13/5). Former leader Ed Miliband has also shortened to 6/1 (from 13/2), while Wes Streeting has drifted to 11/2.
Andy Burnham remains in the frame at 10/1 (from 12/1), though his opportunity may have passed after being blocked from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election. Meanwhile, Alistair Cairns has been the biggest mover in the market, shortening dramatically to 12/1 from 50/1 amid speculation he could play a caretaker role.
William Kedjanyi, Political Betting Analyst at Star Sports, said: “According to the betting markets, it’s all over for Keir Starmer. He is now just a 1/4 shot to exit Downing Street this year following yesterday’s departure of Chief of Staff, Morgan McSweeney. Further to that, the Labour leader is 1/6 not to be the Prime Minister at the next General Election.
“In terms of a likely successor, Angela Rayner is the big story – the former Deputy PM has firmed up at the head of the market and is now 9/4 to replace Starmer (from 13/5), with Ed Miliband also shortening to 6/1 (from 13/2). Conversely, Wes Streeting (11/2) is on the drift.
“Andy Burnham’s opportunity to replace Starmer may well have passed, since being blocked from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election, but he remains in contention at 10/1 (from 12/1).
“Alistair Cairns is one to keep an eye on too – he’s now 12/1 from 50/1 and the biggest mover from the past fortnight. There have been talks of Cairns taking a role as caretaker – as an ex-military man, he may be the ideal solution in a time of crisis.”
