STAR DARTS PREVIEW: Premier League Darts – Week Two

After a thrilling first week of the Premier League Darts in Newcastle, this week it heads to Antwerp in Belgium, where all the players will be continuing to try and get themselves off to a positive start in the league phase, writes EMILY WALLIS.

Last week in Newcastle, we saw this year’s lineup for the first time and there were some great performances, a few shocks but mostly it really whets the appetite for what’s to come in the next few months.

It all started with an outstanding performance from Jonny Clayton who blew away Josh Rock in the quarter final with almost a 110 average! Josh Rock didn’t do much wrong averaging 101 himself but that’s how cutthroat the Premier League can be.

In the next game, Gian van Veen defeated Luke Littler to many people’s surprise. I think van Veen has proved that this isn’t too much of a shock result, particularly over this shorter format, but Littler was certainly under par for me, despite the average just shy of 97 he wasn’t his brilliant best and will start week 2 on zero points.

Some good performances then followed from Luke Humphries narrowly beating Gerwyn Price and Michael van Gerwen with a comfortable win over Stephen Bunting. Ultimately, the final became an all-Dutch affair between van Veen and van Gerwen.

I said in my preview last week that van Gerwen had a rejuvenated look about him this year which rang true as he came through in the final to gain the maximum points he could and has already won more nights than in his whole campaign last year!

Week 2 quarter final matches:

Luke Littler v Luke Humphries

Michael Van Gerwen v Josh Rock

Jonny Clayton v Stephen Bunting

Gerwyn Price v Gian van Veen

There are some very interesting matches to kick off the second week of Premier League action, starting with a rematch of last year’s final between Littler and Humphries.

The last quarter final also looks set to be a great game between two in form players, Price and van Veen.

Luke Littler v Luke Humphries

It’s always a clash that everyone looks forward to with these two almost always bringing the very best out of each other.

Littler didn’t manage to get off the mark last week which could play on his mind knowing that he will have to play much better to do that this week. On the other hand, this could drive him on more and we probably will see a very good version of him.

Humphries has a couple of points on the board already, although he would have been disappointed to not have more. He will know that with Littler going out first round last week, this could be a good steal if he is to beat him this week, perhaps already thinking of topping the table overall.

It should be another great and close game between these two rivals, I think it will go to the wire like it often does but Littler’s a class act when determined and he will bring that on Thursday which could just get him over the line.

Michael van Gerwen v Josh Rock

This looks a tough draw for Premier League debutant, Josh Rock, to get his first set of points on the board. Van Gerwen has been in brilliant form so far this year and will be brimming with confidence.

Most of the Premier League players decided to give the first two Players Championship events in Hildesheim a miss this week including Rock but van Gerwen was one of those who did play and kept the good form rolling making a semi-final and a quarter-final in the two days.

These two have played each other plenty of times now and have both proven they can beat each other. MVG does have the edge in the head-to-head record and I think will add to this tonight.

Jonny Clayton v Stephen Bunting

Jonny Clayton made it no secret that he has been desperate to get back into the Premier League and that it’s one of his favourite tournaments to play in. After having a good 2025 and achieving just that, the first week excitement clearly worked for him as he put up a brilliant average against Rock in their quarter-final last week.

He couldn’t quite keep that up in the semi-final against van Veen and did miss chances, overall though it was a positive start for him.

Stephen Bunting didn’t have the start he would have liked to his campaign, in his match against van Gerwen he went 2-0 up but lost the following six legs eventually losing 6-2.

Clayton is definitely in the better form of these two and I expect him to make the semi-finals two weeks running.

Gerwyn Price v Gian van Veen

On debut, van Veen had a great start to the Premier League last week making the final and he’ll be keen to keep the ball rolling.

Gerwyn Price was another player who did go to Hildesheim for the first two Players Championships as he is someone who thrives both on the stage and in the floor tournaments.

He made the final on Tuesday just losing in a last leg decider to Wessel Nijman. Amazingly though, in the quarter-final of that he whitewashed van Gerwen averaging a staggering 117!

This shows us that Price is feeling very good about his game and although he did lose in the quarter-final to Humphries last week it went to a final leg and I think this week he should get his first points on the board.

Overall, I am thinking that in his current form, Gerwyn Price could have a successful night in Antwerp. With the form that he is in, I like the look of 6/1 for him to win Week 2.

There’s plenty of specials up on the website to check out, one of those is the four players I mentioned above to win so Littler, van Gerwen, Clayton and Price. This has been boosted from 15/2 into 17/2.
