STAR DARTS PREVIEW: Premier League Darts – Week Three

We are already on Week 3 of the Premier League Darts and this week it’s heading up to Glasgow where we should be in for another brilliant night! writes EMILY WALLIS.

Antwerp last week provided some interesting results and I was happy to get two winning selections in at 6/1 and 17/2!

Surprisingly, after two weeks of action we haven’t seen either Luke Littler or Luke Humphries reach a final yet and they are currently sitting 5th and 6th in the table respectively.

The quarter-final matches last week kicked off with a dual between the ‘two Lukes’ and it was another great clash between them. They both averaged comfortably over 100, had seven 180s each and it went down to a last leg decider. Ultimately though, Littler came out on top to put his first points on the board.

Gerwyn Price and Gian van Veen also had a very close match but it was Price who just got over the line to book his spot in the semi-finals. The other two quarter-final winners were Michael van Gerwen and Jonny Clayton who had a great comeback after being 4-0 down to Stephen Bunting.

The semi-final between Littler and van Gerwen was fantastic to watch. It was hard to choose a winner throughout most of the game, van Gerwen kept getting a break of throw and looked the better player but then Littler would come straight back at him. Van Gerwen’s scoring was marginally better than Littler’s which eventually saw him win the match and get through to his second final in two weeks!

The other semi-final was an all-Welsh affair between two friends who have won the World Cup of Darts twice together and Price was a lot quieter than usual when things were going well because of this! It was another close match for Price that went down to the wire, but Price managed to win again and get through to his first final this year.

The final was a good match but van Gerwen certainly didn’t show up as much as he did in his previous game and, in the end, it was Price’s most comfortable win of the night! It was to my delight having selected him at 6/1 to win the night too.

Unfortunately, due to illness, van Gerwen won’t be in Glasgow at all tonight. He’ll be thankful he has made a brilliant start to his campaign but I’m sure will be eager to get better and be back fighting for more points next week.

Week 3 quarter-final matches:

Stephen Bunting v Gian van Veen

Luke Humphries v Josh Rock

Jonny Clayton v Gerwyn Price

Luke Littler (Walkover)

This week in Glasgow, we would have had repeats of the two semi-finals from last week as the last two quarter-finals, although now Luke Littler will go straight into the semi-finals with van Gerwen not able to compete.

There are still three exciting quarter-finals to look forward to though and, even with one less match, it should be a great evening!

Stephen Bunting v Gian van Veen

This match could be a tough one to call. Stephen Bunting is still yet to get off the mark in the Premier League so hasn’t got any points as of now.

He would have been very disappointed with the two results so far too. On the first week he went 2-0 up on van Gerwen and lost 6-2. Last week would have been worse for him though going 4-0 up on Jonny Clayton, within touching distance of the semi-finals, and then losing the next six legs and therefore losing the match. This could potentially be playing on his mind.

However, Gian van Veen has had better results making the final in the first week but I think he is playing far from his best stuff. He did enough against Littler in the first week without being spectacular, he almost did the same against Price in the quarter-final last week but came out on the wrong side of the result.

Both players attended the next set of Players Championship events in Wigan earlier this week and it was Bunting who came away with the far better results making a final and the last 16, beaten by Luke Humphries on that occasion.

In terms of the head-to-head record between them, Bunting is 5-3 up. I think this, along with the Players Championship results this week, could just edge it in Bunting’s favour.

Luke Humphries v Josh Rock

Josh Rock had a night to forget last week losing 6-2 to van Gerwen and averaging just 79. He also would have hoped for better results in Wigan this week.
Humphries, however, won the whole event on Tuesday which I feel could be the confidence boost he needed.

He has comfortably won his last three meetings with Rock, and I think the result will be the same tonight and Rock will have to wait until at least next week to get his first set of points.

Jonny Clayton v Gerwyn Price

As mentioned, this is a repeat of last week’s semi-final and is one I’m particularly looking forward to.

It was a close match last week and the result could have gone either way. Price does however have a massive advantage on the head-to-head record which could count for a lot.

I think this will hopefully be a close game but I’m predicting Price, who has kept his good form going this week, to get over the line once again.

With Littler going straight into the semi-finals, it could leave him slightly vulnerable with the other players having already played a match and gotten in their groove. Saying that though, his performance in the quarter-finals last week was very good and a repeat of that would see him make his first final of this year’s Premier League.

I think after having a good and confidence boosting week, the trophy in Glasgow tonight could go to Luke Humphries. He’ll be itching to get his first nightly win on the board and move himself up the table and it looks a good draw tonight for him to do that.
