STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Tues: Inter Milan v Bodo/Glimt
The knockout stages of the Champions League can provide spectacular drama and Inter’s comeback mission against Bodo/Glimt should certainly be entertaining for the neutral, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.
The Norwegians were not given much chance when their play-off tie was announced but they have rapidly improved over the course of two seasons in Europe and are a different outfit to the one that were beaten by Tottenham in the Europa League semi-final, as they’ve proved this year in the group phase of the Champions League.
Their home form – aided by, but not solely down to, an advantage with arctic conditions and an artificial pitch that opponents have struggled to adapt to – has been exceptional, with 3-1 victories against Manchester City and Inter Milan in their last two home games, whilst they also pulled a shock win off at Atletico Madrid to boot (and have taken a draw from Borussia Dortmund).
Inter complained about the artificial pitch in last week’s defeat but Bodo were the better side and Christian Chivu will need to get another gear from tonight’s hosts. The front three of Jens Petter Hauge, Kasper Høgh and Ole Blomberg caused nuermous problems for what is normally a very solid defensive unit and with a two goals advantage Inter will need to balance their approach very carefully tonight.

The hosts ought to be much happier at home, where they have taken control of the Scudetto thanks to a 2-0 away victory at Lecce in Serie A, a dramatic 3-2 home win over Juventus, a 5-0 thrashing of Sassuolo away and a 2-1 win against Torino. They have a 10 point lead over AC Milan domestically and will be encouraged by the fact that they managed to create a decent amount overseas, with an xG of 1.59, whilst winning the shot count 15-8 and creating the same amount of big chances as the hosts.
Inter are expected to win this leg easily with starsports.bet but progressing will be another matter. Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Barcelona in 2019 was the last time a team overturned a two-goal deficit in the Champions League and the visitors have also had a smoother preparation for this, with the Eliteserien season (Norwegian top flight) having finished at the end of November, allowing them to focus solely on these assignments.
Inter’s home form has been impressive and they are packed with threats but they are going to be without Denzel Dumfries and Lautaro Martinez whilst Hakan Calhanoglu is a doubt, and there’s no margin for error against a side what will have the option of a low block to frustrate the host.
