STAR DARTS PREVIEW: Premier League Darts – Week Six

We are already on Week 6 of the Premier League Darts, it’s flying by and this week it heads to Nottingham, writes EMILY WALLIS.

It’s a brilliant day of sport with the third day of the Cheltenham Festival to enjoy this afternoon and then the darts this evening!

The table is starting to take shape and those nearer the bottom will start feeling the pressure to get results.

Last week in Cardiff, Jonny Clayton almost pulled off the nightly win in front of his home crowd but just felt short in the final.

It almost felt like normal service resumed with Littler taking the overall win, beating Clayton 6-4 in the final.

Littler’s win was much needed having previously won just one match and it has pushed him up to third in the table and now inside that vital top four.

Clayton wouldn’t have been too disappointed though, getting to the final massively helps him to stay on the top of the table and he is currently five points clear of second going into week 6!

We’ve had a big week in between last Thursday and this one with the UK Open taking place in Minehead at the weekend and it was yet another major victory for Littler who comfortably beat James Wade in the final for the second year running!

The other Premier League players to do well were Gerwyn Price and Josh Rock who made the semi-finals and Clayton who made the quarter-finals.

Both Humphries and Stephen Bunting got to the last 16 and Gian van Veen fell at the first hurdle getting knocked out in his first match on Friday.

It’ll be interesting to see how Littler and Luke Humphries play this week as they have been backing horses at Cheltenham rather than on the practice board!

We should be in for another good week though, players certainly have plenty of momentum in what is a jam-packed month of darts with a Euro Tour starting tomorrow too.

Quarter-final matches:

Josh Rock v Stephen Bunting

Jonny Clayton v Michael van Gerwen

Luke Humphries v Gian van Veen

Gerwyn Price v Luke Littler

There are some very interesting quarter-final matches this week including a bottom of the table clash between Rock and Bunting. The last one also looks a belter with how the two are currently playing.

Josh Rock v Stephen Bunting

As said, these two are currently bottom of the table so it looks to be a big game that both will feel pressure to win, Josh Rock especially.

Rock is still yet to pick up any points in the Premier League so far and it’s getting to the point where it must play on his mind. He is playing very well elsewhere, as shown by him getting to the semi-final of the UK Open at the weekend, but it’s just not quite happening for him on these Thursday nights.

Last week, he lost to Littler in the quarter-final despite a 103 average to Littler’s 96 which feels very unlucky! Rock will be trying his best to keep a positive mindset, he knows that this is a big game for him and will also take a lot of confidence from that fact that he was the one to knock Bunting out of the UK Open, beating him 10-7 in the last 16.

Bunting has felt very hit or miss in the Premier League the last two years, he has already won a night but that was the only time he won his quarter-final game, hence why he is second from bottom.

All that said, I am going to be with Josh Rock to finally get off the mark in the Premier League this year.

Jonny Clayton v Michael van Gerwen

Another interesting match, especially considering these two haven’t played each other since April last year.

Van Gerwen was going well in the Premier League until a few weeks ago where he had to withdraw due to illness and since then, he’s lost his quarter-final matches in both weeks meaning he has dropped out of the top 4.

Clayton is currently cruising at the top and I think this will be another win for him, it could be a close one, but Clayton is the more in-form player and I think this should get him over the line.

Luke Humphries v Gian van Veen

For me, this game could be the toughest one to call. Luke Humphries is only one point clear of Bunting near the bottom of the table and has won just three matches.

He’ll be devastated if he weren’t to make the play-offs come the end of these 16 weeks but he is such a determined character and I do expect it to start clicking for him one of these weeks.

I think this will be sooner rather than later as he’ll be doing his best to try and make sure it doesn’t go down to the wire in terms of qualification for the O2.

Gian van Veen has been a real thorn in his side though in recent months and has won seven on their eight last meetings! Most of these has been close games but in really big matches and it seems to me that he’s really gotten under the skin of Humphries.

Humphries is resilient though and will want to finally get back to winning ways against van Veen and I think this will be the night he does that.

Gerwyn Price v Luke Littler

This could be the game of the night as both were in flying form in the UK Open at the weekend and can hopefully keep that going into tonight.

They played each other in the semi-finals last week and Littler won that 6-3 with an outstanding 111 average!

I think tonight will have a closer scoreline but, with the ball now rolling with Littler in the Premier League, I may have to just side with him.

To win the night overall, I think it’s worth taking a chance on Clayton at 8/1. He’s certainly on the nicer half of the draw this evening which he will want to take full advantage of to try and keep his lead at the top.

He absolutely loves the Premier League and I don’t see why he can’t add another nightly win to the one he’s already got.

Star Sports also have plenty of specials up on the site, I like the look of the Banker Treble with Josh Rock, Luke Humphries and Luke Littler all to win which has been boosted from 3/1 into 7/2.
