STAR GOLF PREVIEW: US Open with BLUE HORSESHOE

In the world of professional men’s golf the U.S. Open has a well-earned reputation for being an extremely tough test of a contestant’s complete game, writes BLUE HORSESHOE.

The rough is always penal to say the least and the greens are lightening quick. From what I’ve been seeing of the lead up coverage, it’s no exception this year. Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York looks to be set up to a level of hard verging on nasty.

To get round in par will be an achievement and straight driving looks to be imperative in order to avoid the hay Shinnecock are calling rough this week. I usually look for monster odds opportunities but this week I’m tempering that a bit in order to select a couple of players who I think will survive here better than most.

Blue Horseshoe Loves:

Cam Young – currently at ? with starsports.bet

Young is a prodigious driver of the ball. He also has very solid driving accuracy stats. That combination will be gold dust around here, especially if the winds get up, which is a common occurrence. In this potential test of survival, I think Young will be right there come Sunday.

Sam Burns – currently at ? with starsports.bet

Burns has been right on the pace of his last three PGA tour starts. He’s clearly a man in form and his length off the tee will be a real asset. He is also ranked as one of the best putters on tour. A good putting game on these incredibly testing green complexes will be essential to win at Shinnecock.

Cam Smith – currently at ? with starsports.bet

Smith has been working with swing guru, Butch Harmon, in the last few months. That work is starting to pay off as evidenced by solid efforts at the Masters and the PGA Championship. Smith is also a wizard on and around the greens. If the Aussie can continue his climb out of his form doldrums, this one-time major winner is a proper chance of making it two.

David Puig – currently at ? with starsports.bet

The Spaniard is a fantastic ball striker and an accurate driver. To be able to keep it out of the long grass this week will be a definite stroke saver. Puig is a multiple European Tour winner, and I think his all-round game is not being given the credit it deserves. I believe his very generous price reflects that. David Puig looks an outstanding each way price for mine.
