STAR GOLF PREVIEW: The Open Championship with BLUE HORSESHOE
We’ve reached the final golfing major of the year already, and what a major it is! writes BLUE HORSESHOE.
Royal Birkdale is a proper test of a links course. It’s a par 72 measuring a touch over 7,300 yards, but when that westerly wind whips across Liverpool off the Irish sea, it feels another 300 yards longer.
Fortunately, the weather forecast looks good, so we’re set fair for another classic Open Championship.
Blue Horseshoe Loves:
Patrick Reed – currently at with starsports.bet
A superb chipping and putting game is an absolute must in order to thrive at The Open. Reed is a confirmed wizard around the greens and seems to save his best performances for Europe these days. If he gets away to a good start you can be assured Fat Pat will be in the thick of things come Sunday. Each way all day.
Cam Smith – currently at with starsports.bet
The same short game wizardry is possessed by Cam Smith. He might be a bit out of sorts these days form wise, but word is he’s been working very hard with coach to the stars, Butch Harmon, to get his game back. This former Open Champion’s class cannot be denied, especially on tough links set ups. Don’t be surprised to see the golden mullet flowing in the breeze as he sinks another long-range putt. If he’s anywhere near the lead come the weekend, the Aussie’s a definite factor.
Tom Kim – currently at with starsports.bet
Tom Kim’s form turnaround in the last 3-4 weeks has been nothing short of remarkable. He’s gone from struggling to make a cut all season to finishing close up in his last two starts in the states and then winning the Scottish Open in some style last week. Kim has clearly found something in his game and when these guys find something and get hot, they tend to stay hot. His tail is definitely up, and I think he looks great each way value.
Bernd Wiesberger – currently at with starsports.bet
Here’s my exotic for the week. Bernd went close in the German Open a couple of weeks ago. He’s a nine-time European tour winner who loves links golf and is a brilliant wedge player. His weakness as he’s got older has been his putting. But the broomstick putter he’s moved onto has really done him a lot of favours. Bernd is lovely option if you’re looking for a bit of top 10 or top 20 finish value.
