Star Sports Greyhound Derby: No nerves yet for Verve

Droopys Verve remains a strong 6/4 favourite with Star Sports, sponsors of the English Greyhound Derby at Towcester, having been drawn in Trap 4 for this weekend’s final.

Dorota’s Wildcat, who was drawn in Trap 3 in Thursday’s draw, is the 2/1 second favourite with Bruisers Bullet, who led the market at the beginning of the month, available at 4/1.

Whoops Jack has been drawn in Trap 6, while Bombers Bullet is a 10/1 shot in Trap 1 and Dorotas Vic is 25/1 to cause a shock.

The majority of the betting has been for favourite Droopys Verve over the course of the Greyhound Derby, with the gentleman’s bookmaker set to lose close to £100,000 if the greyhound races to victory on Saturday.

Dorotas Vic has been an outsider throughout the course of the competition, but Star Sports are preparing for a £45,000 loss should he cause an upset and win this weekend.

Ben Keith, Star Sports owner, said: “Greyhound Derby fever is beginning to sweep the sport and we can’t wait for the action to get underway, with Droopys Verve looking a worthwhile 6/4 favourite.

“It looks a wide-open contest this year and last year’s 28/1-winner Astute Missile is proof that anything can happen in this race. What we do know is that it will be a cracking night of racing.”

To help build on the excitement for greyhound racing’s main event this Saturday, Star Sports have created the ‘what’s your greyhound name’ for track fans to identify their moniker by matching their date of birth.

Star Sports, the gentleman’s bookmaker, are the official sponsors of the English Greyhound Derby, which is held at Towcester racecourse on Saturday 2nd June.

The race, which takes place on the 500-metre course, dates back to 1927 and boasts a £350,000 prize fund, with the winner claiming a whopping £175,000.
