ADAM KIRBY: Newbury Saturday

Nice to bag a couple of winners on Friday. Stake Acclaim was an outsider at Newbury for the sprint handicap but he travelled nicely all the way for me and stayed on like a trooper. Later on at Kempton King’s Slipper, trained by Clive (Cox), quickened up nicely close home to with the one mile handicap.

Moving on to Saturday and I have three booked rides at Newbury.

ESCOBAR (3.15pm)

This is always wide open and this year’s renewal looks tougher than ever. My fella lacks a recent run, unlike plenty here, so will need to be fully tuned up on this first start of the season. He won twice here at the beginning of his career so clearly likes the place and rounded off last season with a cracking run at Ascot when he hit the front for me but was collared close home by Sharja Bridge in a competitive handicap. He probably needs to be in that kind of form to feature here and although the ground was testing at Ascot he seems just at home on a quicker surface.

JUST THE MAN (3.50pm)

On the limited form available he looks to have done the best so far with two good runs at Kempton but it may well come down to whether any of the newcomers are above average. There are some looking debutants on paper including Andrew Balding’s Fox Chairman who cost 450,000gns as a yearling.

POUR ME A DRINK (4.25pm)

It’s a very similar story in this race. I’ve ridden him in both his starts and he improved to finish third at Wolverhampton last time out. He’s been gelded since that run and of those who have run Raise You looks a big danger having only been pipped a nose here on debut in September.

Good luck
