I’m riding at Newmarket on Saturday and then it’s down to Goodwood on Sunday for four booked rides. Thought’s on Saturday’s two rides below and I’ll be back on Saturday evening looking ahead to Goodwood.
WHISKEY SOUR (3.40pm Cesarewitch)
Delighted to have picked up a ride for Willie Mullins as he launches a big assault on the Cesarewitch with seven runners.
I ride this fella for the first time but looking through his form he’s got stamina in abundance and wouldn’t mind any overnight rain although I don’t think that’s a neccessity. He was at the peak of his form last year winning four races in a row including the Grade 1 Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown but was presented with that one on a plate after drama at the last two flights.
Back on the flat he was staying on in grand style in the Ebor at York last time out when sixth (encouragingly that was on good to firm ground) and should still be travelling today when quite a few of these have cried enough. He was also fifth in the 2m 4f Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier in the season which again came on quick ground.
There’s any number of dangers but I’m quite happy with Whiskey Sour and hope he can run a big race – freshened up by a break.
CELEBRITY (4.50pm Boadicea Stakes)
Needless to say I don’t know too much about her as she comes over from Dominik Moser’s German yard along with stablemate Artistica.
She’s won a Listed contest over this trip at Hoppegarten this year but this looks a really competitive event with a huge field including a couple of interesting ones from Aidan O’Brien’s stable.
The concern for Celebrity would be that she was last of 12 at Nottingham when pitched in a similar race at Nottingham in May and now has a 3lb penalty here for her German success.
