BEN’S BLOG: ‘On The Wagon’

ben_keith_team-150x150johnhenwood[dropcap]B[/dropcap]log, let me tell you something you don’t know: Wimbledon dog’s bookmaker, John Henwood, is not just a Sixties Dandy, but also, a London Historian, and his expertise so, he offers guided tours.

Today, John took me for a walk, around the Lancaster Gate area, and told me a few tales.

beer150My favourite, was outside The Swan pub, on Bayswater Road. We now know ‘On the wagon’, to mean giving up booze. Do you know why though, Blog? Well, it’s because prisoners, about to be hung, at the Tyburn (now Marble Arch), used to stop for their last pint of beer, here. On leaving, people would call out (possibly to make the situation easier?); ‘He’s on The Wagon!’, before the prisoner, would be put on a coach, for their last journey. AND WHY DID WE EVER STOP THIS TRADITION..?!

In other news:

nlWARNING! A Clapham Know-It-All, has whispered some information in my ear: Nancy Lam, the unique Indonesian restaurant, run by the said, and her pleasant daughter, may close in the New Year, due to NL’s retirement. If so, Blog, you must go, to say ‘goodbye’, and sample her character-filled food and hospitality. It’s all tasty, but I like the mixed satay starter, and squid main best. Always a solid 8.

Over and out, B x
