BEN’S BLOG: ‘Women and Minorities in Racing’

ben_keith_team-150x150[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hat an excellent article, in the Racing Post today, by Julian Muscat, regarding female-jockeys (LINK HERE). As much as possible should be done, to encourage more women, minorities and young people to be involved, in every area of Racing and the Betting-Industry.

At Cheltenham, Star Sports bet next to Julie Williams (of course, daughter of ‘Fearless Freddie’ Williams). She is a most competent bookmaker, with a steady stream of regular Punters. However, although you see women working in the betting-ring, Julie is the only betting in her own name.

Of course, NOBODY is saying that women or minorities are not welcome in the game. But if we are to move forward, everything must be done to give Racing a more cosmopolitan feel. At Royal Ascot, you can cut through the snobbery in the air, like it’s cheddar-cheese. And Cheltenham isn’t all that much better, if you’re not wearing the strict uniform of a Trilby and tweed. This is the main reason I have ALWAYS preferred the inclusive atmosphere of Greyhound Racing. ALL PAYING PUNTERS WELCOME.

Over and out, B x
