BETTING ODDITIES: Just STOP It

BETTING ODDITIES: In his latest weekly blog, DAVID STEWART takes a sideways look at some of the stories making the news in the betting world and beyond.

TWO VOTES PLEASE

“The race that stopped a nation”Australia Tuesday
“The election that stopped a nation”USA Tuesday
“The vote that will stop a nation”UK Lockdown vote Wednesday

I was going to say the USA Election looks an easier puzzle to solve than the Melbourne Cup – but I’m not so sure.

Even Star Sports’ political sage William Kedjanyi has switched horses in the USA Election build-up.

Firmly in the Trump camp when pressed for a selection on video a couple of months ago, William has now turned blue and is in Team Biden, mirroring the shift in the opinion polls.

It’s certainly the prerogative of a pundit to change opinions. These are fluid and dynamic markets and let’s not forget 24 hours is a long time in politics.

For me personally though, the rather simpler adage of ‘never changing your mind’ is definitely ahead on my lifetime P&L.

But there are plenty of times as a punter you SHOULD change your opinion. Perhaps you pick out a horse for the big race on Saturday and then the going dramatically changes so you need to readjust.

It’s also OK to have NO OPINION – which is where I’m at with Trump v Biden.

I think the prices should probably be closer and I’m always amazed about how much strength is STILL placed in opinion polls despite high profile disasters.

⚠️ Susan Boyle 1/1000000 to win Britain’s Got Talent – BEATEN
⚠️ BREXIT 1/4 to not happen – BEATEN
⚠️ Clinton 1/4 to win last US Election – BEATEN

…..system working well. Please send more money.

It’s 2020 and anything can happen. What odds the draw between Mr Sleepy and Mr Noisy?

AT CRAYFORD THE HARE IS RUNNING…..

The Star Sports Greyhound Derby 2020 is over and a worthy winner crowned in Deerjet Sydney at Nottingham.

Of course no crowds but RPGTV did their level best to bring the action to your front room and in the main did a great job…… black tie too for the presenters on Final’s night !!!

It was a shame that the aftermath celebrations were cut right into to bring an ‘away’ race from Crayford.

I fully appreciate the show must and should go on and that they were obligated to show it but scheduling should account better for the ‘crown jewel’ events.

It’s not solely an issue for greyhound racing either. I often wonder what sponsors of ยฃ50,000 handicaps on a busy summer afternoon get out of it when it’s shoe-horned into a race every couple of minutes treadmill.

Breathing space is needed and sponsors need, to put it crudely, bang for their buck.

FISH AND CHIPS – IT’S A NORTHERN THING

URGENT MEMORANDUM:
To all Southern based fish and chip shops.

The secret of good fish and chips is:
(1) Good fish
(2) Good chips
(3) er, that’s it

A sweeping generalisation, I know, but I’ve seldom found a chippy in the south that matches the north.

Especially the likes of the Magpie in Whitby where they regularly queue for fish delivered from the boats opposite and chips made from potatoes delivered by the farmer on his tractor.

NO APPLE JUICE

Apple is worth $2 trillion (* subject to fluctuation if Biden gets in) so they don’t need the likes of me giving them advice ….. but they are getting it anyway.

For a company that prides themselves on design and the customer experience I have to say the design of their wireless ‘magic’ mouse sucks.

Whilst it stays charged for a long time when it does finally run out of juice you can’t use the damn thing whilst refuelling.

Ludicrous and of course it ALWAYS runs out at the most inconvenient times.
