BETTING ODDITIES: Sandown still tingling

I’m writing this a few yards from Sandown Racecourse so it would seem opportune to include a Monday photo of their rather splendid Christmas tree ahead of their popular Tingle Creek meeting this weekend which looks like being a sell out and let’s hope the weather behaves itself this week.

Much has been said about the defection of Shishkin but if the eight declared runners stand their ground we should still be in for a pre-Festive cracker.

I personally think the Shiskin / Henderson criticism has been well over done, in particular by the usual twitter self-proclaimed know-it-alls.

Bottom line is it’s totally down to trainer and owner who, let’s not forget, are keen to have winners rather than horses at home in their boxes.

I’ve argued before about the over dominance in the media of the Cheltenham Festival. It’s contagious and just becomes the go to subject in the absence of anything more creative. And I’m NOT including Road To Cheltenham on Racing TV in that assessment – it’s a good watch, well produced and definitely room for the format especially as it’s been stressed that the emphasis is on the ‘Road’ bit.

I’m as big a fan of the Festival as anyone but not to the detriment of the entire season. Believe it or not most racing fans and punters I speak to at the moment have very little other than a cursory view of Cheltenham in November and contrary to popular opinion haven’t got an ante-post ‘portfolio bursting at the seams.

Most are pre-occupied on whether they have backed a winner at Kempton this afternoon and if they are looking ahead, it won’t be much further than Sandown at the weekend.

Incredible result in the Venezuelan Primera Division last night – please don’t tell me you weren’t following THIS match !!!

It was the game between Monagas and Estudiantes that finished 4-1 but that was only half the story.

Incredibly the match was 2-1 after just FOUR MINUTES !!! I’m happy to stand corrected but surely that’s some kind of record?

And to think how long you can wait for a goal in some games – usually when I’ve backed the overs 🙁

URGENT MEMO TO WALKERS CRISPS: Just because you CAN make any flavour you like, it doesn’t mean you have to. Please see exhibit A – I don’t like mince pies in their original format so can only consider this creation ghastly.

Restaurants don’t tend to put pictures of their dishes on menus as it’s not considered to be de rigueur. A little bit “all you can eat English Breakfast buffet“ sign that you might expect to see in a Spanish coastal resort if you like. I’m all for it though – there aren’t many occasions you go in blind to a purchase without seeing/trying what you are buying first. What are they afraid of? Portion police or over flamboyant and pompous descriptions that don’t live up to expectations? Surely not.
