BETTING ODDITIES: In his latest weekly blog, DAVID STEWART takes a sideways look at some of the stories making the news in the betting world and beyond.

FIRST RESULT FOR 69 DAYS’s fast results service said it all today.

Captain Kangaroo winning the 5.00 at Clonmel on 24 March 2020

winning the 1.00 at Newcastle on 1 June 2020

69 days between the two ‘latest’ results !!!

Welcome back Newcastle. But it was greyhound racing that came back first. Im Sophie won the 10:21am at Perry Barr – the outsider of the field. Welcome to the new ‘normal’ ……

13/2 is ‘Exes and Half‘ in bookie talk (thanks Simon Nott, I don’t know many north of ‘carpet‘).

The three 13/2 chances filled the 1-2-3 in the 3.20 Newcastle. But just LOOK at that Tote dividend.

The Tote will be pleased the meeting was behind closed doors as the winner of the 12 runner handicap didn’t even pay out at a carpet.

Exes and a bit more than half out of that pool 😟

Back With A Bang they proclaimed and the hastily (and in the main remotely) produced edition number 11,560 was a good read with the Alastair Down prologue and Lee Mottershead’s interview with Lester Piggott being the star turns.

The more promising signs from ITV Racing contract renewal are also encouraging for the industry.

At £3.50 a copy though I’d be a spreads seller on the length of time it continues in paper format. When sales decline, it becomes a cycle of increased costs given they can’t print enough to justify the print and distribution economies of scale.

The digital model may be stronger in the long term anyway. Based around more readers picking and choosing what elements of the paper they want. One giant leap needed.

I promise this is the FINAL mention of Dominic Cummings – in this blog at least !!

Two things that really made me smile this week. Have I Got News showing the clip of him running out of Downing Street and saying it was the ‘start of the Great North Run’. Genius!

And secondly THAT table.

There have been some great captions on twitter already.  It reminded me of the raffle table at the local am-dram show. I always think that bottles of wine won in raffles NEVER get drunk. They simply get donated to the next raffle. There’s probably a priceless bottle of unopened port lurking out there at your next local production of Oklahoma!

Anyway, if you’ve got a good caption email it in – I’ll sort a FREE BET with Star for the entry that makes me laugh the most!

Stay safe.
