#BettingPeople: Sir Rupert Mackeson, aka ‘The Bad Baronet’, makes his second appearance within the #BettingPeople series. Whilst there’s plenty of his personal story left to tell, this interview is predominantly centred around his latest book ‘Frankie Dettori’s British Classic Winners’ published under his pen name Rupert Collens by Pan And Sword but with plenty of personal memories eased out of this colourful Octogenarian too. Meeting Rupert Mackeson with Simon Nott.


SIR RUPERT MACKESON (part 1 of 2)

Rupert talks about riding out for Georgie Wells and point to pointers before becoming a cavalry officer. He talks about his first visit to Newbury and witnessing Arkle beaten in the Hennessy Gold Cup. He talks about Frankie Dettori and how he compares to Sir Gordon Richards and his great friend Lester Piggott and how a racecourse tipster tried to relieve him of 6d and how he had lofty ambitions as a child.


SIR RUPERT MACKESON (part 2 of 2)

The bad Baronet talks about being brought up in a large country house and his grandfather who started the Mackeson brewery which was sold in 1921. Rupert talks about his first school which doesn’t sound a lot of fun but Harrow was much better. He confides that his childhood wasn’t a happy one and that his father showed more interest in his gun dog than him, going to university in Ireland and then about his latest book, ‘Frankie Dettori’s British Classic Winners’
