BRIAN TOOMEY: July Cup Reflections & This Week’s Runners

Star Sports ambassador BRIAN TOOMEY returns with his latest blog discussing last week’s runners, what is coming up and reflections on the July Cup…

Last week’s runners

On Wednesday last week we went to Kempton with plenty of hope that Valadero and Classic Speed could get their heads in front with champion jockey William Buick on board. Sadly, it wasn’t either of their days, writes BRIAN TOOMEY.

Valadero didn’t have the greatest of draws and couldn’t get the best position early, so I don’t feel the run was a true reflection of his ability. He’s a big, raw horse who I’m sure has room for improvement, and hopefully he’ll have his day in the sun soon once we’ve found his ideal conditions.

Classic Speed’s race had a barrel load of pace in it, and it just didn’t allow our guy to get the lead he really wants. There are definitely races that’ll suit him down the line, and I just hope next time he can get out in front and dominate.

Next came a trip up to Hamilton with Inanna on Saturday, who unfortunately couldn’t show her best form. It was a quick turnaround of only eight days, and that was probably why she didn’t fire on the day. She’s had a busy time of things and I think a little holiday to recharge her batteries will do her well.

This week’s runners

On Thursday evening we send Miami Thunder to Epsom (8.05pm). It’s his first run for us since joining from George Scott and I’m thrilled to be training for Kia Joorabchian’s Amo Racing operation. He’s done well since the move here and while he’s struggled with the stalls in his career, I’d like to think he can give a bold account of himself on the Downs.

Come Friday, it’ll be the turn of Wake Up Harry in the finale at Newmarket (8.40pm). I’d be hoping that he can get a better position this time out compared to his last start at Kempton, where he was further back than ideal. Kieran Shoemark’s in the plate, so let’s hope the pair get on well.

He’s been a fantastic horse for me, and I’d love him to win again for his owner Harry Redknapp, who’s a legend to train for.

July Cup reflections

Looking back at the July Cup, it was brilliant to see William Buick land the big race of the weekend aboard Mill Stream for Jane Chapple-Hyam. It was his 100th G1 win and part of a four-timer on the day, so you just have to tip your hat to him as one of the very, very best around.

It was a pure pleasure to have him ride two of mine earlier in the week – maybe those two mounts blessed him with a bit of luck for the weekend!

Be Lucky,

BRIAN TOOMEY
