DAVY RUSSELL blog: Navan Sunday

I’m looking forward to Navan on Sunday for Troytown Chase day. I have four, possibly five rides on the card …

12:20 – JAZZY MATTTY (RESERVE) Bar One Racing 3-Y-O Maiden Hurdle (3YO only) 2m

My lad Jazzy Matty is first reserve here so we’ll need a bit of luck to get a run. He’s a grand horse who joined the yard from France. He’s still got some growing up to do but hopefully this will be a stepping stone for his career. Gordon (Elliott) also saddles five in the race proper including the filly New Years Honours who can build on her good second in Down Royal on her first start for the stable. Experience might count for a lot with most of these having their first day at school.

12:50 – MY TRUMP CARD Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden Hurdle (4YO plus) 2m 4f

I’ve done some work on My Trump Card at home and he’s a lovely horse who jumps well but he is still just a little immature. That’s no surprise as he hasn’t any experience on the flat or points so this will be all very new to him. It’s another huge field and the Willie Mullins trained Grangeclare West looks the obvious one after her easy win in Punchestown the last day.

1:20 – John Lynch Carpets & Flooring Monksfield Novice Hurdle (Grade 3) (Class 1) (4YO plus) 2m 4f

The first of the big races on the card and although I don’t have a ride it’s a big race for the stable with American MikeΒ (pictured below) and Three Card Brag among the five runners. American Mike obviously brings top class bumper form to the table and, as hurdles starts go, I thought he did everything right in Down Royal earlier this month and should know plenty more about the hurdling game now. Three Card Brag hasn’t done as much on paper but we were delighted with his third in the For Auction Novice Hurdle here the last day and he’s more than capable of keeping American Mike up to his job here. He gave me a lovely feel when winning his maiden hurdle in Galway.

1:50 – BODHISATTVA Bar One Racing Price Boosts Everyday Handicap Hurdle (80-130) (4YO plus) 2m 6f

This fella is back after a break and returns to Navan where he won his maiden hurdle on heavy. The cheekpieces are on Bodhisattva just to help him concentrate. He’s only five and hasn’t many miles on the clock but I’d say his mark is plenty high enough in what looks a very competitive handicap hurdle.

2:20 – DEATH DUTY Bar One Racing Troytown Handicap Chase (0-150) (Grade B) (4YO plus) 3m

The big race of the day and Gordon saddles eight of the 19 strong field. I ride Death DutyΒ (pictured below) who is a great servant to the yard and was a Grade 1 winner over hurdles here. He hasn’t been showing his best form lately though and needs to bounce back to get involved in what looks as competitive a Troytown as ever. I’d say Frontal Assault will be the one we’ll all need to beat – he ran a cracker in the Irish National when second and then won in grand style at Galway.

2:50 – IBERIQUE DU SEUIL Boardsmill Stud Irish EBF Beginners Chase (4YO plus) 2m 1f

This is a hell of a good beginners chase with so many good hurdlers stepping up. My fella Iberique Du Seuil will need to show us plenty more than he did in Galway the last day and hopefully we’ll see a little more spark from him. Saint Roi and Gordon’s Fil Dor look to have strong claims if tranferring their hurdles form to the fences.

Good Luck
