DAVY RUSSELL blog: Punchestown Festival Friday

I had a good day with the RTE team on Wednesday – it made a big change to be in the pundits chair rather than the saddle but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hopefully I will come on for the run!

Just a short blog on the two Grade 1 races and the bumper on Thursday. Both races look foregone conclusions if the betting is to be believed but, as I always say, they don’t hand out Grade 1 prizes on a plate. Whatever the odds say the horses still need to being their A Game to the table.

5.25pm Paddy Power Champion Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+) 2m

State Man ? was impressive here 12 months ago when winning the Champion Novice Hurdle and with no Constitution Hill standing in the way should resume winning ways. He was no match for Constitution Hill in Cheltenham but still holds Zanahiyr (who I rode that day) and Vauban on that form. If the race is for second place I’d probably marginally favour Sharjah who seldom seems to run a bad race at the top table. ⭐ STARSPORTS.BET MARKET ⭐

6pm Alanna Homes Champion Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+) 2m 3 1/2f

Impaire Et Passe ? has done everything asked of him and couldn’t have been more impressive in the Ballymore the last day (pictured below) and the form of that win took a massive boost when the runner-up Gaelic Warrior won well here on Wednesday. The ground might be slightly quicker than he has faced so far but that could be clutching at straws if you are thinking of taking him on. Gordon (Elliott) runs Amir Kabir who is still learning over hurdles and could run a nice race. ⭐ STARSPORTS.BET MARKET ⭐

7.45pm Avison Young INH Flat Race (5-7yo) 2m 2f

I’m writing up my blog before Ballyburn runs on Thursday in the closing bumper but if that one runs well again it gives a nice form boost to Gordon’s Quantum Storm ? who finished second to him here in February. I think he’s a nice horse and the expectation is that he bumped into something special last time. ⭐ STARSPORTS.BET MARKET ⭐

Good Luck
