DAVY RUSSELL: Downpatrick Sunday

Delighted to win the feature at Thurles on Saturday – the Pierce Molony Memorial – aboard Cubomania. Despite just four runners there was plenty of drama with plenty of jumping errors from the novice chasers – the most serious being Benruben who was making a real race of it when he took a tumble at the last.

Later on Stooshie ran a much better race in the beginners chase – he was staying on really well but we just couldn’t get to You Can’t Catch Me who I guess lived up to his name!

A word too about Darling Miss who showed her first signs of form under Rules when third in the stayers handicap hurdle. It was a much improved effort and she seems to be going the right way now.

Moving on to Sunday when I’m riding at Downpatrick where yielding ground is forecast.

SUNDAY

DOWNPATRICK

JEREMYS DREAM (2.15pm)

Whilst not one of the leading lights from the stable she is consistent enough and certainly has it within her to land a contest like this. She was beaten a fair way the last day at Fairyhouse but it looked a hotter contest than this and she’s up against very similar types here – all bidding for that elusive first win.

COUNT SIMON (2.45pm)

He’s the absolute model of consistency but struggling to win and has to give weight away to all his rivals here with a penalty for his novice hurdle win here at Downpatrick last year. I was on him the last day in Naas where he chased home Mount Pelier in a handicap hurdle. The trip is a slight worry but he should again run his solid race.

ALPHA INDI (3.20pm)

Is having his first run for Gordon (Elliott) having been off the course since finishing a well beaten third in a handicap chase at Fakenham just over a year ago. He’s shown a level of form in the past and we’ll find out much more about where we are at today as he’s back over the smaller obstacles and some of his better runs have come with give in the ground.

OUT SAM (Ulster National 3.50pm)

He missed Cheltenham due to a stone bruise and comes into this off the back of a short break. He’s very consistent and has plenty of talent too as he proved when winning the Cork Grand National last year. He also ran a cracker the last day at Gowran when fourth in the Thyestes. He should relish the trip and hopefully he will give me a good spin. Logical Song is an interesting rival if he is fully wound up for this – his first start since winning the Cork Grand National in 2017.
