DAVY RUSSELL EXCLUSIVE BLOG: Punchestown Sunday

Pleased to pick up a winner on Saturday with Top Bandit who followed up on his Cheltenham win for me and did it nicely. Unfortunately Buddy Rich was a non runner because of the ground.

Fingers crossed for some more success in Punchestown on Sunday. It’s a great day of racing and I’ve also recorded my thoughts below on Zanahiyr’s chances in the feature Morgiana. Weather wise there’s only a little bit of rain forecast.

SUNDAY

PUNCHESTOWN

FANCY FOUNDATIONS (12.30) Liam & Valerie Brennan Florida Pearl Novice Chase (Grade 2)

Fancy Foundations runs here instead of Cheltenham and my fella was in the process of running a respectable race in the Grade 3 at Tipperary the last day before tipping up three out. He’s been in good form over the summer though winning a couple of races and we’ll take our chance in what looks an open renewal. Sixshooter and the Down Royal third Vanillier obviously have chances and Gordon (Elliott) also runs Run Wild Fred who is still a maiden over fences but has been knocking at the door and brings plenty of experience to the table.

BATCIO (1.00) Ryans Cleaning Handicap Chase

Since he has stepped up trip Batcio (pictured below) seems to have found a bit of improvement. He’s a horse that needs to arrive late on the scene. He’s up 6lb from his last win and there’re no worries about the short break as he runs well fresh.

ZANAHIYR (2.05) Unibet Morgiana Hurdle (Grade 1)

The race of the day. We thought a lot of Zanahiyr last year and were a bit disappointed with him in Cheltenham but he has bounced back this season and was impressive in Down Royal the last day. Four-year-olds don’t have the best record in this but he is in good form at home. On Wednesday he worked alongside his rival here Abacadabras and both are in good nick. Biggest danger to the pair might be Echoes In Rain but last week’s winner Darasso and 2018 winner Sharjah can hardly be ruled out.

More thoughts below …..

MR FRED ROGERS (2.40) I.N.H. Stallion Owners EBF Maiden Hurdle

Mr Fred Rogers is a horse we really like at home his work has been really good and are hopeful he will run a nice race. He ran well in Wexford and hopefully he can build on that experience here.

DALLAS DES PICTONS (3.15) Pertemps Network Group Handicap Hurdle (Qualifier)

He’s a chaser and hurdler and runs good races over both codes. He’s back over hurdles here trying three miles and hopefully we can get Dallas Des Pictons into the frame and qualified for the Pertemps next March.

Good Luck
Davy
