DAVY RUSSELL: Galway Festival Thursday

Back at Galway for day four today and some nice rides – on paper at least. A quick word on yesterday. I thought Days Without End ran well in the opener but we just got caught by one with Diamond Hill. In the Galway Plate, Mengli Khan just got caught up in the big field traffic and was a little novicey at some of his fences.

FROM EDEN (2.00pm)

My fella has plenty of experience around Galway from his hurdling days and has made a solid start start over fences so far. He’s finished second in all three of his races but not beaten far on each occasion. His jumping has generally been sound and he’s up in trip today. There’s a real tough nut to crack here in the shape of Early Doors. Joseph’s (O’Brien) runner won the Martin Pipe at the Cheltenham Festival and looks the sort to do well over fences.

Has done well for us in his last couple of starts and proved at Aintree how good he can be when winning the Grade 3 Red Rum Handicap Chase easily. It was soft that day though and that must be a concern today that the ground might be a little quick for him. Willie (Mullins) has a strong hand here with three of the seven runners and Robin De Carlow could be the biggest danger after his back to back wins at Kilbeggan and Killarney.

He’s having a great summer and keeps on improving. He was beaten by Peregrine Run at Cork last time but got within a length of a really talented horse who has much more experience than him. All five of his rivals here are previous winners in their last couple of starts and are open to further improvement too but I’m hopeful Doctor Duffy can get back to winning ways here.

CHOSEN MATE (4.55pm Galway Hurdle)

Ultra competitive as always but Chosen Mate has plenty of class as he proved when winning a Grade 2 at Naas for me and a fast run two miles should suit him here. He hasn’t raced over jumps since Aintree but ran well on the flat at Leopardstown last month when second. Band Of Outlaws looks one of the bigger dangers after his good run after a break in the Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary.

Good Luck
