Turnpike Lane ran a big race for me in the opening Listed hurdle on Tuesday but in the end I was a disappointed we didn’t go on and win it. I thought at the last he was was going to do it but the winner (Fast Buck) just got away from him.
Back to Galway today for two rides on Plate day.
DAYS WITHOUT END (5.10pm)
This is really competitive by Galway standards with the 140 rated Dancing On My Own in the field and looking a winner in waiting. I rode Days Without End two starts ago at Punchestown in a race where they finished well strung out and he was a 17 length second to Elimay. The winner has won again since in Listed company so the form looks a little better and since then Days Without End has had a spin on the flat the Curragh. He’ll need to find a bit of improvement to win this though I would have thought.
MENGLI KHAN (Galway Plate 7.20pm)
Looking forward to getting back on Mengli Khan in the big race of the week. This will be his longest distance race to date but I can’t see it being a problem as he was staying on in the 2m 4f Grade 1 novice chase at Aintree back in April. He’s a class act but has paid the price for his consistency with his handicap mark. The ground was riding good here yesterday and there have been no changes overnight so that should prove fine for him. I’m hoping his experience over fences and in big fields will prove a positive and he’ll run a big race. Like my earlier ride, he also comes into this on the back of a spin on the flat. There are dangers all over, at the top of the weights Black Corton never seems to run a bad race whilst I also like the look of Coney Island who is back after a break since finishing sixth to Frodon in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
