DAVY RUSSELL: Gowran Park Thursday

A bonus blog from me for Thyestes day at Gowran. I ride Roaring Bull in the feature and am also thrilled to have been asked to ride Apple’s Jade in the Galmoy. What a terrific midweek card to look forward to.

THURSDAY

GOWRAN PARK

APPLE’S JADE (1.50pm John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle Grade 2)

I’m obviously delighted to pick up the ride on Apple’s Jade. She was great the last day at Leopardstown and showed all her old zest. Hopefully she can reproduce that form here, although it does look a tough contest with Benie Des Dieux up against us – she was unlucky when falling at the last in the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham but has bounced back strongly since with wins at Punchestown and Auteuil. It should be a mouthwatering clash and I’m very much looking forward to riding such a quality mare again.

ROARING BULL (Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase Grade A)

I’m riding Roaring Bull for Gordon (Elliott) who got up in the shadows of the post to win the Paddy Power at Christmas (below) and who can forget the commentary of Jerry Hannon on that race! It’ll just be a case of whether the handicapper has caught up with him as he has been put up 7lb for that narrow win. There are dangers left, right and centre but one that I do fear is stablemate Borice who should relish conditions and the challenge of the big field.

CHOSEN MATE (3.35pm)

He made a great start over fences when third to Melon over Christmas and I thought he jumped very well that day. However, he didn’t run his race for me the last day at Fairyhouse but looking back it looked a tough contest and he should hopefully find life a little easier here.

Good Luck
DAVY
