DAVY RUSSELL: Navan Sunday

Unfortunately I am sick 🤢 today so will miss my two rides at Navan.

Earlier thoughts on the two rides and the Hunter Chase below.

BLESS THE WINGS (2.20pm Ladbrokes Ireland Boyne Hurdle Grade 2)

I tell you something about this fella. He might be 14 on the racecard but no one’s told him – he’s still sprightly and it was great to see him run such a cracker of a race in the Grand National last year when he was third to me and Tiger Roll who is also in today’s field on the second start of the season for him.

Both are destined for the Cross Country at Cheltenham and we’ll have to see whether they have the gears for this trip in a Grade 2. That said you just never know in racing.

Bachasson and Off You Go are clearly going to be hard to beat with them both coming off the back of good wins last time out and they both fully deserve to take their step up in class.

BLOW BY BLOW (3.25pm Ladbrokes Acca Boosty Ten Up Novice Chase Grade 2)

The big race of the day over fences brings together two former winners of the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham. My fella won it last year and Champagne Classic won in 2017. Both are trained by Gordon (Elliott).

Blow By Blow has been competing in pretty tough races and comes here on the back of being pulled up at Naas the last day when he simply didn’t fire. Champagne Classic was third that day (on his comeback) and that should have put him right for a crack at this.

4.00pm (Boardsmill Stud Hunters Chase)

I’ll be staying to watch this one as it looks a belter of a hunter chase and I can’t remember the last hunter chase run at the course. I’ll be keeping a close eye on Gordon’s Ucello Conti who won well at Thurles last time out. He’s closely matched with Sydney Paget on Aghabullogue point form last month and there should be plenty of Cheltenham clues in this one.
