DAVY RUSSELL: Newbury Saturday

Absolutely cracking weekend of racing and I can’t wait for it to get started. I’m riding at Newbury on Saturday and then Fairyhouse on Sunday where there are three Grade 1’s on the card.

I’ll be back with another blog for my views on Fairyhouse but for now Newbury’s superb Saturday card featuring the Ladbrokes Trophy Chase at 3pm or ‘The Hennessy’ in old money.

SATURDAY

NEWBURY

ANGELS ANTICS 12.10pm

The Twiston-Davies stable is going well and I ride Angels Antics for Dai Walters in the opener. All three of her races so far have come at Ffos Las and she looked good when winning by nine lengths last time out relishing the soft ground. It’s a small field but still competitive. My obvious danger is Cap Soleil who is unbeaten in four starts but does have a 3lb penalty to overcome.

MASTER OF IRONY 2.25pm

Riding him for the first time. He brings fitness to the table and comes here on the back of a win at Wetherby. In at the deeper end today for sure but the Gerry Feilden is a limited handicap with the top three having to carry 11-10 so we are getting the best part of a stone from them.

WHISPER 3pm (Ladbrokes Trophy Chase)

This has been the plan since as far back as Liverpool last season when he finished second to Might Bite in the Mildmay. I like horses who have long term plans all mapped out and I was pleased with his reappearance at Kempton where he beat sole rival Clan Des Obeaux. He would have needed that race to put him straight for this and I was delighted to see Clan Des Obeaux give the form a good boost with an easy win at Haydock last weekend. Whisper really knuckled down well to the job at Kempton and he is a horse that takes his races well. We’ve got plenty of weight but 10 of the last 12 winners have carried 11 stone or more and my fella has plenty of class as he proved when winning at Grade 1 level over hurdles. My biggest danger looks to be Total Recall. I finished second to him in the Munster National and he won that in grand style.

DUKE OF NAVAN (3.35pm)

It’s been a while since I’ve ridden him, I won a novice hurdle on him at Newcastle. He shaped really well at Aintree last time out when a close up third to Baby King who also runs today and I’m 3lb better off with that one. Chances if he builds on that Aintree run.
