DAVY RUSSELL: Sligo Sunday

It’s been a quiet week but preparations are well underway for the Punchestown Festival. Just the one ride this weekend at Sligo on Sunday. I’ve got the day off on Saturday but I’ll be sure to catch the bet365 Celebration Chase from Sandown Park. Although the match with Cyrname hasn’t materialised it’ll still be a treat for racegoers and the TV audience to watch the legend that is Altior. He bids to win this for the third year in a row and now looks to have a straightforward task to extend his winning run to 19 which I think passes the record of wins set by Big Buck’s.

He can be a bit of monkey but there’s no doubt he’s got plenty of talent and this looks a good opportunity for him to get his first win over jumps. He had plenty of talent on the flat and is out again quickly after finishing third for me at Fairyhouse on Tuesday to La Tektor in a race where the front three finished nicely clear. Hopefully, a reproduction of that effort should be enough and whilst he’s versatile ground wise he probably wouldn’t want it too soft.
