DAVY RUSSELL Sun: Newbury & Navan

The top class weekend action continues on Sunday ….

1.05pm Navan (Ten Up Novice Chase)
Only the field of five and it will be fascinating to see how Coko Beach gets on. He was really good in the Thyestes the last day and has come out of that race well. This looks the ideal stepping stone for him and he should take some beating.

2.25pm Newbury (Denman Chase)
A fascinating renewal with the classy Clan Des Obeaux looking the one to beat. Yet, I’ve a feeling we are going to see a much better Lostintranslation with his stable in a bit better form and having had a wind op. There shouldn’t be much between the pair.

2.47pm Navan (Boyne Hurdle)
All eyes will be on the Tiger (pictured below)! This is a race he has won in the past and he obviously likes it around Navan. However, conditions really won’t be in his favour and he looks sure to be up against it here. The key is just to get him back on track. As I mentioned yesterday I schooled him earlier in the week and he gave me a great feel. He seems in good form but whether he could beat the likes of his stable mate Fury Road is a doubt.

3.00pm Newbury (Game Spirit)
I can see Nicky Henderson’s logic in dropping Champ (pictured below) in trip for his Festival prep and it will be interesting to see whether he has the speed to compete with these over two miles. Sceau Royal has had a busy season and comes here on the back of a fall which isn’t ideal. However, he did run well in the race last year and cannot be discounted getting weight from the others. I think they all may struggle to beat Paul Nicholls’ Greaneteen though.

3.35pm Newbury (Betfair Hurdle)
A really competitive renewal of the Betfair Hurdle as you might expect and you can make cases for at least a dozen of these. Nicky Henderson always has to be respected in this race and his top weight Buzz and Mister Coffey look leading contenders. The one to beat in my view is Dan Skelton’s Cadzand. This fella looked really good at Kempton the last day and his trainer has a habit of landing competitive handicap hurdles like this.
