DAVY RUSSELL: Weekend Racing Preview

I must start by passing on my condolences and love to the Mullins family on the sad loss of Maureen. She never lost her love of the sport and her enthusiasm was never short of infectious. She was at her happiest on the racecourse and Irish racing has lost one of its greatest stars writes DAVY RUSSELL.

Well, they say miracles do happen. Another week goes by and not only have I survived another week of Dancing with the Stars, but I have also been granted immunity which means I can’t be eliminated this week however bad I am!

Everyone seemed to really enjoy our Katy Perry ‘Roar’ contemporary dance last Sunday, and it was enough to keep us in for another fortnight which is remarkable. This week is the tango, so I’ve probably got a bit lucky as things get a bit more complex in the competition – but it should be good craic all the same.

Anyway, onto the horse racing action this weekend with some good races in Ireland on both Saturday and Sunday…

2.17pm Red Mills Trial Hurdle (Grade 3) 2m

It doesn’t look to be the strongest renewal that we’ve seen.

Henry de Bromhead’s Lantry Lady scampered home to win by 14 lengths on debut over course and distance. It’s hard to tell what kind of a mare she is but there’s no doubt that she will be a short price to follow up.

It’s a very strange race, but fair play to the trainers for having the confidence to enter their horses in this because there is loads of black type up for grabs.

3.27pm Red Mills Chase (Grade 2) 2m 4f

This race has a couple of nicely rated horses in it. Riviere D’etel (pictured below) ran last weekend so it’s quite a quick turnaround for her but she does like going right-handed and being ridden handy. Saint Sam from Willie Mullins likes to lead from the front and is quite hard to catch so it should be an interesting race. You’d have to go with Riviere D’etel with the only worry being how recently she ran, but despite it not being a golden renewal, it should still make for a good race.

2.35 QuinnBet Grand National Trial Handicap Chase (Listed Race) 3m 3f 6y

This should be an interesting race, and with Paul Townend doing 10 stone on Willie Mullins’ We’llhavewan, that is likely to be fancied. His dad bred it so he’s probably got the connection there and 10 stone would be pushing the boat for Paul so they must really fancy him.

3.05pm Madigan Group Irish EBF Sheila Bourke Novice Hurdle (Listed Race) 2m

This is a race that has been won by horses like Dysart Dynamo, who jump out, go from the front and have plenty of experience. It’s a sharp track on the inside for this meeting as a rule, so I think the horse who uses their experience positively will be come on top.

There aren’t too many runners, but it looks competitive enough and I’m looking at Gordon’s Jigoro. He’s a nice horse who ran well last time and should come on for that.

Good Luck
