England 4-1 Netherlands, EURO 96 group-stage

We couldn’t do this list without a game from EURO 96, could we? The tournament where football came home for England…nearly.

The best performance from the Three Lions in that tournament, and possibly one of England’s best ever displays at any major tournament, came against the Netherlands who had reached the semi-finals in Sweden four years prior.

Nobody expected such a one-sided scoreline, but two goals each from Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer – the EURO 96 Golden Boot winner – dealt the Dutch a thrashing at the old Wembley Stadium.

France 3-2 Portugal, EURO 1984 semi-final

We’re going all the way back to 1984 for the next match in this list – one of the most exhilarating and dramatic semi-finals in European Championship history.

It looked as if with just minutes remaining that, in their own back yard no less, France were going to be dumped out of the Euros by Portugal (where have we seen that before…?) with Michel Hidalgo’s side trailing 2-1.

However, goals from Jean-Francois Domergue and Michel Platini turned things around in stunning fashion to win the game for France and set up a final with Spain – which they went on to win 2-0.

Denmark 2-0 Germany, EURO 92 final

One of the biggest shocks in European Championship history came at EURO 92 where Denmark – who only made it to the tournament after Yugoslavia were booted out as a result of the breakup of the country and the ensuing warfare there – went on to win the whole tournament.

Inspired by the likes of Peter Schmeichel and Brian Laudrup, Denmark knocked out the likes of France and England on their way to the final, and completed one of the ultimate underdog story against Germany with a 2-0 victory in one of the most memorable ever Euro finals.

France 4-5 Yugoslavia, EURO 1960 semi-final

I mean, a nine-goal thriller in the semi-final of a European Championship…this game had to go in this list, didn’t it?

We have to go back a long way for this one, but there’s no way we could omit this stunning nine-goal thriller from EURO 1960 where Yugoslavia came back from 3-1 down against the mighty France thanks to a brilliant brace from Drazan Jerkovic.

I wonder if there’ll be any nine-goal thrillers at EURO 2024? I certainly hope so.

France 2-1 Italy, EURO 2000 final

Golden goal…remember that? I’m sure fans of France and Italy do.

After France dramatically saw off Portugal in the semi-finals through a Zinedine Zidane penalty – again, via golden goal – they went one better in the final; breaking Italian hearts through a David Trezeguet strike deep into extra-time.

Should we bring back golden goal? I’m not against it if it can bring more dramatic moments like the EURO 200 final.
