EURO 2024 PREVIEW Mon: Romania v Ukraine

Romania qualified with ease for Euro 2024 and fans of the Tricolorii will hope they bring their qualifying form to the finals when they face Ukraine at the Allianz Arena, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.

They topped Group I in qualifying, which included Switzerland, Israel and Kosovo, while remaining unbeaten throughout and Switzerland didn’t do that form any harm on Saturday, which will give the Romanians hope of a strong showing.

They progressed thanks to a strong defence, and whilst Radu Dragusin may have struggled with life at Tottenham Hotspur, the 22-year-old centre-back is the pivotal piece in this team. Romania also have an excellent shot-stopper in Horatiu Moldovan, whose performances for the national team earned him a move to Atlรฉtico Madrid in January.

If on his best form, Nicolae Stanciu can provide creativity from midfield, but goals have been an issue for Romania – they only scored 16 goals in 10 qualifying games which some might see as a lowly return considering that they faced Israel, Belarus, Kosovo and Andorra – and much responsibility rests on the shoulders of Dennis Man and Denis Alibec. Denis Man – ? to score today – played a crucial part in Parma’s promotion to Serie A from Serie B, but the pair will need to find a new level in Germany if they’re to continue upsetting the odds.

Ukraine reached the quarter-finals at Euro 2020 only to find runners-up England too good and on paper their fans – who already have so much to be proud of given their circumstances – could have plenty of fun at this year’s tournament. They had to battle hard to make it here, finishing level on points with Euro 2020 champions Italy after a controversial penalty call went against them in their final game, and then scoring late goals to win play-offs against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland.

They showed plenty of steel in those encounters, calling upon some of the big names available to Serhiy Rebrov who arguably has one of the best Ukrainian teams of recent years at his disposal. Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin played a huge part in Real Madrid winning the Champions League and La Liga, defender Illia Zabarnyi was a mainstay of a Bournemouth side that had a strong Premier League season, Oleksandr Zinchenko made 27 league appearances (and 6 in the Champions League) for runners up Arsenal whilst striker Artem Dovbyk – ? to score anytime – was top scorer in La Liga with 24 goals last term and Girona teammate Viktor Tyshankov had 16 goals and assists.

There’s quality and experience running through this Ukraine side, who could have a good run at this tournament, and 17/20 makes appeal for them to find a way past a Romania side who have struggled to find goals for all their defensive grit.
