EURO 2024 PREVIEW Sun: Slovenia v Denmark

England’s opponents Slovenia and Denmark renew their familiar rivalry in the teatime kickoff to kickstart Group C, writes LEWIS WILLIAMS.

Although the ranking of third placed teams looks the best shot for Slovenia to reach the playoffs, they shouldn’t be underestimated here and have held two clean sheets from their last five games and are unbeaten in six since losing to the re-opposing Denmark 2-1 back in their qualification group in November.

That match featured Yussuf Poulsen starting ahead of the injured Rasmus Hojlund and although a 2-1 victory doesn’t scream massively in favour of the Great Danes, the reading of 2.25 Expected Goals (xG) compared to Slovenia’s 0.06 tells you it was an empty affair for Matjaz Kek’s men.

With that said, Rasmus did indeed start in Slovenia’s leg which finished a 1-1 draw and was a far better showing from the home side. Andraz Sporar comes into his own in a Slovenia shirt and working alongside the shining light in Benjamin Sesko – who has netted 14 goals in 31 games for Leipzig – may prove dangerous for a Danish backline that conceded more goals than Slovenia in qualifying. The aforementioned Sesko has generated newfound hope in Slovenian football and he’s has been a revelation for RB Leipzig and is certainly a reason they finished in the top 4 after being purchased for just 24 million Euros from Salzburg.

Although their qualification campaign of Slovenia doesn’t necessarily inspire bullish confidence, the old guard of tournaments past is now out the door and this starting 11 is surely more appealing than any those of the past 6 years. I believe they might be too big at ? to win this match.

In Denmark you have serial underachievers who failed to escape the group stage in Qatar against the likes of Australia and Tunisia and scored just one goal from three matches that yielded a point from a goalless draw against Tunisia.

21 year-old Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund netted 7 goals in qualification and built up a streak similar to the one he sustained at club level, scoring in a third of his Premier League goals on his debut English season. He’ll be backed up by a squad scattered with Premier League players in Hojbjerg and Norgaard providing service, ahead of Vestergaard and Andersen in the backline which will surely prove difficult and tedious to break down.

Despite the class contained within the Denmark lineup I see this matchup repeating a similar trend of its last two renewals – tight action with both sides struggling to get massively on top, and perhaps just one moment of magic from either side could be enough. I’m backing under 1.5 goals at ? as well as Slovenia to win at ? with starsports.bet.
