EURO 2024 PREVIEW Tue: France v Poland

France may have already qualified for the last 16 thanks to results last night but there’s plenty on the line for Les Bleus and they will want to show their best against Poland, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.

If France can better the Netherlands’ result against Austria (click here for our preview of that encounter), they would take top spot in the group, a lucrative result given how the draw is splitting. Top spot would put France in the opposite side of the draw to hosts Germany, Spain and Portugal, which is surely the more appealing route on paper at least.

Les Bleus will also be looking for an improved showing so far – they worked hard to overcome a tough Austria side but defenders were the star of the show when they drew with the Netherlands last Friday, helped by VAR ruling out Xavi Simons’ second-half strike (and hindered by the absence of Kylian Mbappe due to a broken nose).

Didier Deschamps will be frustrated with French wastefulness – Antoine Griezmann ( a boosted ? chance to score first tonight) couldn’t make the best from a number of good chances and Marcus Thuram didn’t make his mark on the game as French fans would have hoped – but they aren’t struggling to make chances.

Poland were predicted to struggle before the tournament and became the first side to be eliminated when Austria beat them 3-1 on Friday. Their defeats to the Dutch and the Austrians have been hard-fought, but they can have no complaints for either.

The Dutch won the shot count 21-12 in their first game, when the Netherlands missed several strong chances, and the Austrians turned the screw after the break with nine shots and 1.34 xG created.

Piotr Zielinski, Krzysztof Piątek and Adam Buksa have all impressed in the absence of Robert Lewandowski – who looked sharp off the bench against Austria – but Poland have struggled to deal with more technical and sharper opponents and the same result looks likely against France, regardless of whether Mbappe plays or not.

Both Poland’s games so far have seen over 2.5 goals, and France – with the motivation of top spot – can be expected to put their front foot forwards, so backing the favourites to win and Over 2.5 goals makes appeal.
