Farmers Insurance Open
Woods, Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Snedeker, Fowler. Forget all the big names this week in the Farmers Insurance Open and get your money on Kevin Chappell. I know what you’re thinking, has he gone crazy? We’ve never heard of him. But I think this week at Torrey Pines Chappell can register a first PGA tour win.
This is an event that under a former sponsor was dominated by Tiger Woods (he was successful 6 times between 1999 and 2008). But those halcyon days are firmly behind him and Woods is no longer the feared golfer he once was. Although still able to maintain the number two position in the world rankings he’s current form is nowhere near that of the past.
California native Chappell has not exactly set the tour alight so far but has displayed signs that his game is progressing and the experiences gained in the last couple of years will help the push for a first victory. The stats don’t present a good case but sometimes you have to believe your eyes and I think there is a win lurking for Chappell somewhere. He only achieved two top twenty’s and a top ten last year but in his first outing this year, admittedly at an easier layout, he finished in a tie for 8th shooting four rounds in the sixties and a final round 62 to propel himself into contention. I’ll admit Chappell is not one of my most confident selections but if he can get off to a good start, sometimes his Achilles heel, he can give his followers a run for their money this week.
