GEORGE BOUGHEY: Champions Day – A proud day!
It’s a relatively quiet weekend for us on the runners front, with just three horses heading to Redcar and Southwell, but Saturday promises to be a very special day for everyone at Craven House Stables, writes GEORGE BOUGHEY.
We’re incredibly proud of both Billy Loughnane and Jack Callan, who will be crowned Champion Jockey and Champion Apprentice respectively at Ascot on British Champions Day. It’s a fantastic achievement for two young riders who have worked incredibly hard throughout the season, and we’re delighted to have played a part in their success.
It’s particularly special to see them both recognised on one of the biggest days in the British racing calendar, and hopefully there will be plenty more success to come for both of them.
FRIDAY
ELECTRIC ARC – 5:23pm Redcar
Electric Arc steps into handicap company for the first time, and I’m looking forward to seeing how she gets on in calmer waters.
She’s a well-bred filly, being a half-sister to two stakes performers, and although she needs to improve on what she’s shown in novice company, I think we’ve found a nice opportunity for her to take a step forward.

SATURDAY
RADIANCE – 5:00pm Southwell
Radiance continues to train really well at home and seems in great form.
She was just a little bit of a weak finisher at Newmarket last time, and perhaps we made too much use of her that day. We may look to ride her a little more conservatively this time, which will hopefully help her finish her race off better.
She’s in good shape and we’re looking forward to getting her back on the track.
OXBRIDGE – 7:30pm Southwell
Oxbridge was a little raw and green on his debut, when we went there thinking he would win.
He comes from a very fast family, being by Blue Point out of a five-furlong mare who has already produced several five-furlong horses, some of whom have improved with time.
We’re dropping him back to five furlongs, which should suit him, and he certainly looks to have come forward and stripped fitter for that first run.
I’d be hopeful he can go very close.
BRITISH CHAMPIONS DAY AT ASCOT
Queen Elizabeth II Stakes – Gstaad
I don’t think it’s the strongest renewal of the QEII, and I’m going to take a chance on Gstaad bouncing back to form.
He’s returning from a break, and it’s possible that a few of the stable’s horses were slightly underperforming earlier in the season, something they’ve acknowledged themselves.
I think there’s every chance he could bounce back after that time off, and he would be my selection at a bit of a price.

Champion Stakes – Bay City Roller
I’d love to see George Scott’s Bay City Roller win the Champion Stakes.
Any rain would obviously be a bonus for him, and I thought he ran a huge race in the Arc. He may have benefited from a very good ride in a race where the field was covered by only around seven lengths, but it was still an excellent performance.
With his stamina assured, I think he goes into Saturday’s race with an outstanding chance.
