GEORGE BOUGHEY: Weekend Preview

We’re now just days away from Royal Ascot. We’ve hopefully got plenty to look forward to next week and I’ll be writing a daily blog throughout Royal Ascot, keeping you updated on all of our runners, writes GEORGE BOUGHEY.

Before then, we’ve got a handful of runners this weekend.

FRIDAY

KAITO – 2:48pm Sandown

Kaito is a well-bred Dubawi colt who makes his debut at Sandown. He’s a nice horse whose work has been solid and this will give us a good indication of where we are with him heading into the second half of the season.

His pedigree suggests he’ll only improve with time and looks the type to come into his own later in the year, so we’re not in any rush with him. He’s pleased us at home and should give a good account of himself.

DIVINE WHISPER – 3:35pm York

Divine Whisper was purchased at the Goffs Breeze-Up Sale and she’s a straightforward filly who looks to have plenty of natural speed.

We won this race last year with India Love and there are similarities between the two fillies. As with any debutant, normal first-day-at-school rules apply, but she’s shown enough at home to suggest she’ll be winning a maiden before too long.

TRYST – 4:20pm Chester

Tryst drops another pound in the weights and remains over 10 furlongs. I’d initially hoped to return to a mile, but Chester’s unique nature means this trip could prove a little easier for her to see out.

She handled slower ground reasonably well on her debut at Goodwood last year when she was still very weak physically. I was disappointed with her latest run as she came back a little light afterwards, but she’s strengthened up since and looks much better now. I’d hope she’ll be thereabouts.

SATURDAY

UTMOST GOOD FAITH – 3:55pm Sandown

I was disappointed with Utmost Good Faith at Chester, although the wide draw didn’t help. We’ve got a much better handle on him now than we did earlier in the year.

He was doing too much in his work at home, so he wears a tongue-tie for the first time and generally seems much more settled and manageable. This is a competitive race, but I’m much happier with him than I was going into Chester. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a much-improved performance.

SUNDAY

BRUNHILDE – 3:47pm Salisbury

Brunhilde is set to run at Salisbury and I was pleased with her debut. She hadn’t done a huge amount beforehand and was still quite weak physically, but she shaped with plenty of promise.

Her pedigree suggests stepping up to 10 furlongs will suit. She’s out of a Pivotal mare whose progeny have stayed a mile and a quarter and beyond, so this trip looks a natural progression. I’m looking forward to seeing her back on the track.
