Aug 2009 Premier Sunderland 1-3 Chelsea
May 2009 Premier Sunderland 2-3 Chelsea

The last time these two met of course was in the Premier League and it was a tight contest – Chelsea edging it 4-3 and there’s now a gulf of 24 points between them in the stable and Sunderland are guaranteed one thing – they will bottom of the table for Christmas šŸ™

Manager Poyet is now hoping for a good Cup run if nothing else to take away some of the doom and gloom.

ā€œI need to take these games seriously,ā€ he said. ā€œIn the last round against Southampton, we played well and we went on to win [in the league] against Man City. Letā€™s see if we can repeat that and do well and then beat Norwich.

His glass seems half full but Chelsea have a good cup record in recent years and should again prove hard for Sunderland to get past.

Chelsea have won their last nine trips to Sunderland in all competitions and are unbeaten in 10 at the Stadium of Light.

Over 2.5 goals seems the call. It’s in the stats after all.
